Keeping a pet is a great thing, especially if you are a parent because there are so many benefits of teaching your kids all about discipline and how to interact with animals. However, if you are someone who still doesn’t own a pet, but you want to, in today’s guide we’ll tell you how to make the best choice based on your personality.

We already know that some pets don’t go well with someone’s personality, but that doesn’t mean that you should feel limited by something like this. It’s quite weird to see an old lady walking down a muscular pit-bull though, but hey, if that’s what they want, we’re more than happy to see them together.

When you hear someone say “this pet is great for teachers”, or “this pet is cool for older people”, it’s because there are some combinations that go well with different types of people. However, that’s not the only thing that we mean when we say “choosing by your personality”.

If you are a lazier person in general, then you probably want a pet that’s not too hyperactive, and one that doesn’t make a lot of mess, simply because you wouldn’t want to clean after them all the time. This is just one of the examples, but feel free to stick around until the end of this article if you are willing to learn some more.

1. Choose how responsible you are

We’re going to start this guide with one of the simplest and most obvious things that you need to do when you own a pet, which is to take care of them. Let’s say that you are a busy person, and when you’re finally done with all that work in your day, you just want to lay down and rest. Well, if you have a pet that constantly runs around and creates a lot of mess and noise at the same time, then you won’t have a great time after all.
Instead, you can choose a different kind, something that will be calm and rest along your side when you need those quiet hours.

2. Cat or dog?

Or something else perhaps? You know that fish are pets too, although they are very quiet and they don’t make any mess, they’re still a great choice for those who want to keep something but without having to spend all of their precious time running around and fixing all the mess.

As far as we know, dogs seem to be calmer and they don’t climb on a lot of things, although they do start barking when they get over-excited, and this can be an issue if you are a person who enjoys silence.

Cats on the other side, they are quiet but their curiosity makes them do some pretty wild things, such as jumping on top of everything that’s in their sight or scratching furniture. You’ll have to balance the pros and cons and choose for yourself. 3. Depending on your profession

Let’s say that you are a teacher, and you have to hold a regular class every workday of the week. However, you are a teacher in an elementary school, and you want to help the other kids learn how to interact with animals and some of the other important basics of life.

You can do this with only a limited number of animals, ones that won’t make noise or mess, and won’t run around the classroom while you’re trying to teach. This is why we usually recommend calmer sorts, such as turtles, fish, and birds.

If you are a programmer, or you’re just working from home and noise doesn’t bother you, feel free to go with anything that you find appealing. Be advised though, cats walk on top of the keyboard quite often, so if you find a few messy lines in your code, don’t say that we didn’t warn you.

4. If you are an animal lover

If you just love animals, and you want to keep multiple sorts in your home, you can pull it out, just know that you’ll have to be very responsible and there will be quite some maintenance that’ll need to be done.

Also, don’t believe in those myths that cats and dogs cannot live together, because if you manage to discipline them the right way, everyone can get along, no matter what kind of animal we’re talking about.

A great combination for people who want multiple pets at once is keeping a bird and a hamster because they cannot become enemies in any way, especially if you secure them nicely. You can find more info about birds and bird feeders on seabirdsanctuary.org. The same goes for birds and fish, but try to avoid some of the scarier combinations such as a cat and a bird, or a cat and mice. Rabbits are cool as well, and they’re very calm and soft. A great addition if you have kids.

5. If you require an active company

Let’s say that you are someone who lives alone, and you don’t interact with other people as much, so you need someone to keep you company in your lonely environment. Dogs are usually the best option for these types of people, and as the old saying goes, “dog is a man’s best friend”.

Dogs are cool for so many reasons, and they will never disappoint you in any way, especially if you manage to train them well. We’re not disliking cats at all, but they seem to be more “passive” in a certain way when it comes to the company.

6. If you’re a daredevil

Now there comes this last group of people, those who love taking all things to the extreme, even when it comes to choosing a pet. If you are one of them, you can ever opt for a wild animal, but make sure that you know what you’re getting yourself into before making that purchase. If you are an expert in disciplining them, however, you shouldn’t have a problem at all. Tigers or raccoons anyone?
