THAT HOMIE’S DEAD
Despite having lost it all and ruined everyone’s lives, Walt himself goes out on a high note as the universe grants him a bullet and he beats cancer. The show ends with Walt’s final death shot, similar to the metaphysical ones during his scans. A visually symbolic posture we also saw with Jesse in 5.09:
- This particular death shot plays out like the one from 4.11 as the camera pulls away from Walt’s body, and then spins around him like Jesse’s merry-go-round in 5.10 or the MRI deathbed in 5.08, until he’s almost inverted before the credits roll. We’ve also seen this same dead posture with Skyler in 5.03, just two episodes before she attempted her suicidal pool stunt:
- There have been many indications of Walt’s death with proper imagery throughout the series, usually in significant plot points or before he pulls some bewildering Heisenberg move (most notably as the death shot before finally finding an excuse to kill Krazy 8). This notion brings us back to Skinny Pete and Badger’s Star Trek discussion in 5.09, specifically speaking, when it came to teleportation killing Captain Kirk over and over again.
- The bullet hits Walt right around the same area where he shot Mike in 5.07, which also brings the curious bullet hole imagery from 3.06 to mind. Earlier in the episode Walt mentions the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains, fittingly there’s a lot of blood in the episode and as mentioned in the previous section, Almighty-Walt works in mysterious ways to save Jesse, the remaining fragment of his decency. I guess in the end, he did see this twisted image of a tragic messiah in himself…
