“Nothing important happened today”
Although it felt like it could have ended with the conclusion of Season 7, The X-Files carried on for two more seasons, with a rejuvenated mythology and plenty of mixed feelings about Doggett and Reyes taking over the reins from Mulder and Scully. While Seasons 6 and 7 didn’t quite pack the mythological punch of their predecessors, Mulder’s abduction, followed by his return, and the consequences of William’s birth in Season 8, helped launch the series into a more engaging, if short-lived, new conspiracy.
A conclusion is offered in Season 9 that wraps things up hastily but reasonably neatly, while leaving one major loose end untied for a possible future return – the alien colonisation of earth. While Mulder and Scully’s position in the FBI is uncertain at the end of series, a glimmer of hope for defending the human race is given in the form of Magnetite, a rare metal that can destroy the Super Soldiers.
