NBC has released a slew of up-close and personal videos featuring characters from their upcoming series, The Event. The short promos feature four of the main characters from the show talking ambiguously about their connection to the Event.
On the surface these videos may not appear to offer much insight into exactly what this mystery ‘event’ might be, but I wonder whether they actually reveal more of a supernatural slant to the show’s premise. Head past the jump to watch the videos and see what you make of them.
The four videos feature U.S. President Eli Martinez (Blair Underwood), Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), Sophia Maquire (Laura Innes) and Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) all making their own pleas (or demands) in relation to The Event. These snippets give a useful illustration of how the different characters are positioned in relation to the mystery ‘event’. Some of them are in the know, others want to be in the know, and some just appear to be caught up in the whole affair (although you can bet that there’s a deeper connection to be unearthed later on).
Check them all out below. The most interesting one, for me, has to be Sophia’s:
Pres. Eli Martinez wants the truth:
“I am the president of the United States. Give me…the truth”.
Sean Walker wants to be believed:
“I’m not a terrorist. I’m not a terrorist!”
Laura Innes wants to be trusted:
“Please..let us out. We are not a threat. You can trust me”
Blake Sterling wants to keep it secret:
“The American public cannot be told about these…..people”

As advertising goes, I found this to be very effective at making the show seem intriguing. There’s no doubt that this is the best set of promos to come out of the show so far. As I mentioned, I think there might be a few clues, that suggest this show might have a supernatural slant, hidden in what was said – or rather, how it was said.
Take the character of Laura. She pleads that she can be trusted, but it’s as though she’s conveying that message by mere thought alone. Actress Sophia Maguire doesn’t talk – she projects. It’s a similar theme with the Sean Walker character.
Then we have Blake Sterling, who is very reluctant to call the detainees “people”.
Now I could be well off-base here (and I probably am), but I think we could be looking at a show with a slightly more fantastical underlying premise than it may seem, such as alien conspiracy, perhaps? Too predictable? Yeah, I don’t blame you. How about some kind of hybridized-human type twist? I could elaborate, but at the risk of being completely wrong, I’ll leave it at that…for now.
What do you think The Event could be? While you’re mulling it over, check out the latest promos for the show:
