Ian Somerhalder has been reminiscing about his time on the ABC serial that was LOST.

Somerhalder, who currently plays Damon on the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, has been talking fondly about the Hawaiian locations where LOST was filmed and asked co-creator Damon Lindelof, on Twitter, why his character was dispatched so early.

“@DamonLindelof Damon,Im in a place thats so much like Hawaii.Thinking about LOST&how magical it was-what did I do to get killed so early?”

Somerhalder played Oceanic flight 815 passenger Boone, who died in quite tragic circumstances in the Season 1 episode “Do No Harm” (though he made various subsequent appearances) — a casualty of John Locke’s Island fervour, or perhaps Boone’s own stupidity.

Anyway, Lindelof tweeted back, with tongue-in-cheek:

“It was your hair. Your glorious hair. I coveted it. And since it could never be mine, Boone had to go. #IAMTHATPETTY”

As derided as Boone and his sister-stroke lover often were, they were interesting enough characters who always had a lot going on. One of my favorite relationships from Season 1 was the Boone/Locke combination. Who can forget Shannon ribbing Boone for always going off into the jungle with his new boyfriend, and who can forget Locke’s “Theresa falls up the stairs..” dream?

We should have known back then that things wouldn’t necessarily end well for dear John. Even though it kinda of did, courtesy of an ending that worked on an emotional level but, some might say, blew up the show’s mythology — much like John Locke did the submarine. And the Flame station. And the Swan hatch. And the submarine mark II (albeit, that was MIB).
