EP Robert Kirkman and star Jon Bernthal reflect on the ‘new world order’ that has emerged in AMC‘s post apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead.
Bernthal assesses Shane’s ability to adapt to the unforgiving world presented by the series:
“I think what’s so beautiful about Shane is he kind of adopts this new world order. He’s realizing that there’s actually no laws in this world. And he’s kind of becoming this creature of the zombie apocalypse where he can shut down all emotions. But the tragedy of his character is he realizes that’s an impossible task. He’s probably the most emotional character on the show. So he’s tricking himself. It’s just such a great role to play.”

Kirkman acknowledges the benefit of the show’s long-form narrative in illustrating Shane’s evolution:
“It’s always more interesting any time you can have the audience questioning whether or not this guy is actually a bad guy. Being able to take our time and show Shane evolving and growing into himself is a lot cooler than the ‘Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am’ that you get in the comic.”
As for Shane’s life-span on the series (before speculation that Bernthal will headline TNT’s L.A. Noir pilot), Benthal was non-committal:
“The way I look at it is — and I know I’m being a cheese ball — but I really do look at what I do as being a soldier for the story. I want nothing more than to work with them forever. But if to service the story characters have to be sacrificed, so be it.”
