One of the most rabidly speculated unanswered questions from The Walking Dead is the mystery of what suicidal scientist Edwin Jenner whispered in Rick Grimes’ ear at the end of the first season. Andrew Lincoln offers some fresh hints on this “pivotal” mystery.

Lincoln reveals to the Washington Post that he’s embodied the mystery of Jenner’s whisper, so much so that not even his wife knows the answer:

“Not even my wife knows what he whispered to me. He chooses not to tell people so why would I tell.”

Lincoln, who describes the comments as “pivotal” for his character, Rick Grimes, hints that the message was not good news:

“This is a scientist who seemingly held all the cards to what this epidemic is about and I do think, you know, you would imagine he would have something of value to say on that matter. Well, he chose to kill himself.”

As for the intensifying situation on Hershel’s farm, Lincoln spills that Rick and his group will likely leave soon:

“Something happens and they realize very quickly that the farm is not as secure as they may think.”

The big test for the Jenner mystery concerns how satisfying the answer is. The show has treated it like a huge mystery due to the fact that Rick decided to keep it to himself, while not..quite..revealing the answer in the season 2 premiere in a radio message intended for Morgan. So, hopefully when the answer comes it has payoff and makes sense for all the right story and character reasons. Fingers crossed.
