THE WALKING DEAD: First-Look At The Big Bad Governor

Run for cover! The first-look at The Walking Dead‘s newest post-apocalypse-dwelling Big Bad has arrived. If this first glimpse is anything to go by, the Governor will wield his fury over the third season of the popular AMC serial — and his razor blade.

Here’s the first photo of the clean-shaven Governor, portrayed by David Morrissey:

If he looks somewhat different in appearance to the Governor portrayed in the comic books (on which the show is based), then that’s pretty much intentional — as recently noted by executive producer Robert Kirkman, the producers want to put a slightly different spin on the TV depiction of the iconic character:

In the comic, the Governor is a villain. Our Governor is also, clearly, a villain. He may not be as readily apparent as what’s in the comic book. We will certainly put our spin on that. But we have a dynamic, compelling character that we’re excited to bring into season 3. We expect to tell a story about two different groups of people: Rick’s band of survivors, and the Governor’s world of Woodbury.

That’s not to say the villain will be vastly different from his comic book entity in terms of character. Kirkman notes:

The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic. I think that he’s definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He’s definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.”

His portrayer, Morrissey, recently said that he’s attracted by the character’s “desire for survival above everything else. I’m finding out what his fears, anxieties and loves are so I can make him my own.”

If the pre-season buzz is anything to go by, those survival qualities will be needed by the barnful by protagonists and villains in the third season of The Walking Dead, shuffling into view this fall on AMC.

Are you excited to see The Governor? Who d’you suppose the guy in the background is — anyone of note?

Looking forward to see David Morrissey’s acting, he has the challenge to convert a quite bidimensional character in a worthy rival of the job that Andrew Lincoln has done with Rick Grimes. ;)
