The Event Will Take Place In The UK

Channel 4 has acquired the UK broadcast rights to NBC’s conspiracy serial, The Event.

It looks like the decision to screen the Pilot at Comic-Con was a factor in Channel 4′s decision. Critical opinion of the episode was fairly mixed, from what we could gather, but importantly it kick-started the show’s buzz.

C4′s acting chief creative officer, Julian Bellamy, said: “The Event was the standout show at this year’s pilot screenings. Ambitious, clever, fast-paced and gripping – the series is the perfect addition to Channel 4′s slate of quality US series.”

C4, if you remember, was the network that brought Lost to UK shores. Since then, rival networks Sky and Five have been the leaders in picking up fresh US drama, but C4 have reacted early to get in on The Event.

The Event follows a man desperately investigating the disappearances of his girlfriend, leading him to expose one of the biggest cover-ups in U.S. history.

The series will broadcast on C4 in October, leaving UK viewers a couple of weeks behind US broadcast. I wonder whether they will do what Five did with FlashForward and broadcast the show a few days after it airs on NBC, therefore reducing the impact of spoilers as well as illegal downloading of the series. (From what I recall, this certainly helped build Five’s audience ratings). Time will tell, I guess.
