Is NBC’s canceled sci-fi series, The Event, set to continue as a miniseries?
UPDATE: Syfy has quickly moved to (somewhat) quash rumors that they will pick up The Event. Craig Engler, a senior executive at the channel, has just tweeted the following:
“To answer some questions I’ve been getting, at this time we have no plans to pick up The Event.”
I say ‘somewhat’ because he doesn’t completely rule it out, and the words “at this time” will keep the candle flickering for hopeful Eventies. Thanks to mesa for the tip.
In the weeks since The Event was canned by NBC, both the show’s creators and several cast members have told fans they are “working hard to find another home” for the show.
While Netflix was the touted ‘destination’, it’s now being reported that show’s creators are trying to hatch a deal with Syfy, with a view to picking up The Event as a miniseries.
According to Deadline‘s Nellie Andreeva:
I hear there are talks with Syfy to pick up The Event as a miniseries. Helping things is the fact that Syfy and The Event producer, Universal Media Studios, are NBCUniversal corporate siblings. But migrating a broadcast show to cable is never easy, and I hear discussions are underway to see if it would be financially feasible for The Event to continue on Syfy.
Syfy has been active post-upfronts this year. The cable network also has been kicking the tires of the Fox pilot Locke & Key, but there haven’t been any substantial discussions.
Intwisting indeed. If such a deal were to go through (and it’s a pretty big if), one thing that springs to mind is that a shorter season would probably suit the show. Not that such a thing particularly helped ABC’s V in its final season, but the miniseries format would potentially allow for tighter storytelling.
We’ll of course be following this story.
How would you feel about The Event continuing on Syfy?
