NBC’s recently picked up Pilot, The Event, is one of the serialized show’s we’ll be keeping tabs on in the 2010/11 season. With the LOST journey now complete, and the likes of Heroes and FlashForward consigned to the cancelation bin, The Event (should it make it to series) will be one of the few overarching dramas on network TV.
While that’s all well and good, I do have to wonder whether NBC have made an early mistake by suggestively promoting it as the next ‘Lost’. I mean, look at this description on the NBC portal and ask yourself which show instantly springs to mind.
Hmm.
“MORE. QUESTIONS. A suspense-filled journey where the answers only lead to bigger questions”.
(Lost spoiler alert). Heck, it’s almost as if ‘Mother‘ were here:
“Every question I answer will simply lead to another question”
Let’s face it, Lost has always been about stacking mysteries on top of mysteries, and answering few questions in between. It was one of the appeals and despite some fans’ frustrations, it was effective within the context of the show. While Event looks to be more 24 than Lost, it’s clear that NBC wouldn’t mind tapping into some of that Lost fan base with the lure of spiralling mysteries and overarching plot elements.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing – personally I’d love for Fringe to attract some of the Lost fanbase, but at least Fringe has already built up its own identity. The brand-spanking new ‘Event’ might be better off trying to be their own thing – look at the number of show’s that have tried to do what Lost does, very few have succeeded. All that said, we’ll see where this one goes, it certainly looks interesting.
So, what exactly is the Event? This preview trailer might not help you work that question out, but it may leave you intrigued enough to check it out when it airs this fall:

Still unsure? Here’s the official description:
“The Event” is an emotional high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, “The Class”), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée, Leila (Sarah Roemer, “Disturbia”), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history. Sean’s quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Blair Underwood, “Dirty Sexy Money”); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, “ER”), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean’s shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, “Gilmore Girls”). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.
Ian Anthony Dale (“Daybreak”) and Emmy winner Željko Ivanek (“Damages”) also star in the ensemble drama.
“The Event” is a production of Universal Media Studios and Steve Stark Productions. Stark (“Medium,” “Facing Kate”) serves as executive producer, Nick Wauters (“The 4400,” “Eureka”) is creator/co-executive producer and Jeffrey Reiner (“Friday Night Lights,” “Trauma”) is the director/executive producer.
