We’re just under a month away from the premiere of NBC’s new conspiracy thriller, The Event, but are we any closer to figuring out why we should care about this mysterious, apparently global, happening?
The last batch of character videos that we featured gave us a few clues, so perhaps the show’s actors can offer a few more hints – particularly in relation to mysterious detainee leader, Sophia Maguire. Check out the videos after the jump.
I’m hesitant to say that Event might be something of a ‘mosaic’, given FlashForward’s demise, but the following cast videos really do convey the sense that the seemingly disparate pieces are all part of a much larger game. We might have known this already, but hearing the cast describe their characters adds another layer of intrigue to the conspiracy and mystery which will no doubt be afoot.

Once again, perhaps the most intriguing offering comes from Laura Innes and her character, Sophia Maguire:

Is it just me or does Innes give a few subtle hints about the nature of the detainees when she says: “she’d do anything that she needs to do to make happen what she needs to happen.” I could be reading way too much into these tidbits, but at this point I would be very surprised if there’s not a supernatural or mystical quality to Sophia and her fellows.
As for the Event itself? The question I have is why Sophia is so against the world knowing about the Event? Is she worried what this knowledge would do to humanity, or worried about what humanity would do to her people? Perhaps the Event can be prevented – is this something Sophia doesn’t want to happen? I guess the intriguing thing on a character level is that it’s not just the Event itself that is a major issue – it’s that the Event getting out into the public domain would somehow put her people at risk. Of course, I’m making a lot of (potentially inaccurate) assumptions here, but you have to start somewhere.
