For CBS, it’s Elementary, but for producers of the BBC‘s Sherlock, the US network’s upcoming interpretation is “extremely worrying”.

According to the Independent, producers of the BBC’s acclaimed Sherlock series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, are prepared to take legal action against CBS over their Sherlock offering which appears to tread similar ground.

The BBC’s Sherlock is a hit on both sides of the pond, and the rival series — described as a new Sherlock Holmes adaptation set in modern-day New York — has ruffled some feathers.

Sue Vertue, Sherlock Executive Producer, had this to say about Elementary:

“We understand that CBS are doing their own version of an updated Sherlock Holmes. It’s interesting, as they approached us a while back about remaking our show. At the time, they made great assurances about their integrity, so we have to assume that their modernised Sherlock Holmes doesn’t resemble ours in any way, as that would be extremely worrying. We are very proud of our show and like any proud parent, will protect the interest and wellbeing of our offspring.”

Very deliberately chosen words there and we can see where she’s coming from. Sherlock is a reinvention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories in the first instance, but it’s difficult to see how CBS will do a ‘modern take’ on Sherlock Holmes without impinging on the BBC’s version.

On the legal front, Margaret Tofalides, a copyright specialist at law firm Manches, said:

“The concept of a new Sherlock Holmes is unprotectable. But if the unusual elements of the BBC series – the modern settings, characters, clothes, plots and distinctive visual style – were closely reproduced in the CBS version, that could form the basis of a potential copyright claim.”

We’ll be able to judge when more information is available on Elementary.

Elsewhere, Virtue has poured cold water on speculation that the already commissioned third series of Sherlock would air later this year, tweeting that it is “sadly unlikely”:

Sorry to be a killjoy but [Steven Moffat] didn’t actually mean S3 of Sherlock would [air] before end of year. I think that is sadly unlikely.

HOW DID SHERLOCK ESCAPE DEATH?

We all saw him jump, but there’s little doubt that he’s alive by the end of the episode, watching Watson mourn his passing at his own funeral. So how did he Sherlock survive the Reichenbach Fall?

Before we look at the possible explanation, let’s quickly go over some less likely alternatives:

1. Watson thought he saw Sherlock fall to his death because the clever detective administered him with the fear toxin from the secret research base in “The Hounds Of Baskervilles.”

2. Watson didn’t jump at all and instead threw Moriarty’s ‘dead’ body from the roof, where it was switched with a Sherlock lookalike after hitting the ground. This would involve the help of Molly, Mycroft or the Homeless Network.

Now here’s what we think happened:

• Before meeting Moriarty on the roof, we see Sherlock ask Molly for her help.

• Being a medical professional, she would be able to help falsify his death, especially if Mycroft is also in on the ruse.

Sherlock, who seems genuinely shocked by Moriarty’s ‘suicude’, puts his plan into action. We believe it could well consist of the following steps:

• He gives an emotional goodbye to Watson so that the good doctor believes Sherlock is going to jump to his death — essentially planting an unkillable idea in his mind (a concept foreshadowed earlier in the episode).

• He ensures that Watson stands a certain distance away from thee building, so that he doesn’t make it to the landing spot in time to see everything.

• Sherlock jumps from the building onto a pre-arranged truck (above) filled with ‘rubbish bags’ (presumably containing something to break his fall).

• Molly/Mycroft then apply blood to his face before he lies down on the ground, the truck still obscuring the full extent of the ruse.

• While this is happening (remember, we’re dealing with seconds here), a biker hired by Sherlock intentionally bumps into Watson, knocking him to the ground where he hits his head and becomes disorientated — his narrative is now unreliable, as he’s missed at least a 5-10 seconds. That’s all Sherlock needs.

• The truck conveniently drives away with Molly/Mycroft having performed their part of the ruse.

• Disorientated, Watson makes his way over to Sherlock’s ‘dead body’, where a crowd of Sherlock-arranged passers by (The Homeless Network) have already gathered.

• The combination of the crowd’s reaction and Watson’s disorientation means he doesn’t perform a proper check for Sherlock’s pulse and succumbs to the unkillable idea that Sherlock is dead.

• Sherlock is carted away extremely quickly by ‘paramedics’ hired by Sherlock (Molly/Mycroft would be able to falsify his death report).

• Watson, and crucially, the assassins, believe that Sherlock is dead.

But of course, he isn’t dead — just his legend (for now)..

There’s some wiggle-room in there for Sherlock to have been carried away in the truck after making the jump, with Molly/Mycroft rolling a dead corpse onto the ground where he would have landed. This corpse would presumably be the Sherlock lookalike that Moriarty hired to kidnap the kids, or someone altered to look like Sherlock, of which there’s already a precedent when Irene Adler faked her death by using a body double, so it’s not impossible that Sherlock could have done something similar, with the aid of Molly/Mycroft.

Whether there was any of that fear toxin used within this ruse is up for debate. I’m not sure it’s necessary, but it could have been used on Watson and/or the assassins to further fool/distract them.

I also think it’s important to note that even at the funeral, Watson has a nagging belief (hope) that Sherlock isn’t dead. Perhaps in the subconscious recesses of his mind the actual narrative of events is trying to break through?

Now, all of that could be way off the mark, and we accept that one or two aspects of the explanation might be a bit of a reach. We also recognize that there are one or two other curious moments that might come into play (Sherlock throwing his phone on the roof before jumping, Moriarty’s supposed suicide, etc), so there’s plenty of room for anyone to refute or build on this possible explanation. In the meantime, what a cracking finale it was, eh?

Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have been talking about where they could take the show in Series 3 and beyond.

Speaking to Cultbox, the duo teased:

SM: “Well, there were 60 originals! We love doing this, this is brilliant fun so [we’ll keep going] as long as we can keep Benedict and Martin coming back really.”

MG: “Because it’s a magpie approach, it’s not like ‘that’s that done’. I mean, particularly these three are very big stories but because we’re doing bits and piece and obviously creating new stuff, it sort of means the canon is blown…”

SM: “I fondly imagine it’d be nice to stop it for a while and come back and see what they’re like in their 40s or 50s, because normally these two characters are portrayed in their 50s.”

MG: “That’s where they start…”

SM: “So we’re actually at the beginning. It might be interesting in a couple of decades when they come back and [we] see what they’re like.”

Sherlock Series begins in the US in May. Sherlock has been commissioned for a third series by the BBC, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman set to reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson.

We already know that a third series of Sherlock has already been commissioned by the BBC, but will Benedict Cumberbatch return as the man in the detective hat?

Despite Cumberbatch’s schedule becoming ever more packed, the chances look good, with his UK rep apparently saying:

“I’m sure he would love to do a 3rd series. It’s very unlikely they would have Sherlock without Sherlock.”

As for Watson, Martin Freeman is playing Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit flicks, but he recently said he would like to do a third Sherlock series.

Sherlock Series 2 premiere in the US in May.

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have confirmed that Sherlock will return for a third series.

Following the conclusion of the final episode of Series 2, Moffat and Gatiss both took to twitter to confirm the show would be back for a third series:

Moffat tweeted:

“#sherlock Yes of course there’s going to be a third series – it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!”.

While Gatiss wrote:

“Gotcha! And of course there’ll be a third series! It was commissioned at the same time as series two!!”

Here’s a short description for Hounds:

A hound from hell. Sherlock’s most famous case. But is a monster really stalking Dartmoor?

Sherlock is back for a second series, but did the Series 2 premiere live up to our high expectations? We review “A Scandal In Belgravia” in Q&A format to find out.

What did you make of the overarching story?

There wasn’t as much as I’d have liked, but we did at least see the other side of the series 1 cliffhanger. Sherlock and Watson’s escape from Moriarty’s bomb wasn’t as elaborate was I expected (i.e. it didn’t require Sherlock to use his smarts), but I liked the fact that Irene Adler intervened (later repaid in full by Sherlock) which led into the “Scandal”. Of course, the mostly off-camera involvement of Moriarty throughout was also crucial as it suggests we haven’t seen the last of him.

Not much in the way of character development though?

That’s one of the problems with Sherlock in that we don’t really get to see ongoing character development to the level that we might hope. If anything it’s expressed through the Holmes/Watson relationship, in their banter, conflicts and the ongoing references to their affection for one another — which is fine. But, I would like to see more in the way of lasting, evolving developments.

My hope is that Sherlock’s involvement with “The Woman” will leave a lasting mark on his character, something to let us know that she not only mattered to him, but to the story going forward. I thought it was great to see signs of this in the episode when Sherlock checked himself by actually apologizing to Molly Parker after being rude to her, suggesting his respect for women is improving. I actually think love is an interesting tool to dig into Sherlock because it offers him some depth while helping to explain his detachment. So, we’re not devoid of ongoing character development, but it remains to be seen how much of it sticks.

Technology has been a big part of the reinvention of Sherlock Holmes, has series 2 continued in that vein?

Do ducks quack? Seriously, it was great to see the utilisation of modern technology in the episode. My favorite was probably the wi-fi crime scene investigation, with Sherlock observing from a laptop because the case wasn’t interesting enough for him to leave Baker Street. Although the circumstances are different, I guess Sherlock and Walter Bishop from Fringe are cut from similar cloth.

You mentioned off-blog that the visual elements allow us into Sherlock’s head-space. How so?

By visual elements I’m specifically referring to the onscreen cues that zap us through Sherlock’s thoughts when he’s sizing someone up. As with the first series, these moments are so much fun to watch, while also letting us into Sherlock’s thought-process. What’s interesting to remember is that Watson, Mrs Hudson, et al, aren’t privy to these insights, which places extra weight on Mrs Hudsen’s remark about no-one knowing what goes on in Sherlock’s mind — so we’re in a unique position, so to speak. Of course, there’s still a lot more that goes on between his ears, but it’s always great to see his ‘super-powers’ in action. It’s equally fun when the ‘narrator’ takes over and provides us with visual cues that don’t come from Sherlock’s mind (such as the bit where Irene is downloading Sherlock’s pictures from her phone).

What does this tell us about Sherlock?

Interesting question. Certainly it speaks to his hyper-quick mind and implies that he’s a fantastic judge of character. Whether this makes him a good judge of person, well, that remains to be seen and perhaps that’s something that can be explored further. I mean, the human brain is like a machine, Sherlock’s even more so in its depiction, so I ask you — what does this tell us about Sherlock?

That’s he’s a robot from the future?

Ha! You’ve been reading my Terra Nova reviews. Good one, but no, that’s not quite what I’m getting at, but I appreciate the effort.

OK, so it seems that Sherlock enjoys being in control, how can anyone ever really get inside that mind of his?

Control? Yes. Enjoys? Perhaps, but it’s also part of his nature, his condition. But you’ll note that Irene did manage to get inside Sherlock’s head in this episode..

When?

When she returned his coat while he was unconscious. Again this goes back to the visual power of the show — as Irene’s whispers, she generates a world inside Sherlock’s mind. She not only entered Sherlock’s ‘dream’ (so to speak), but she worked out the ‘case of the killer boomerang’ — something only his perspective had achieved up until that point.

Sherlock, not in control..

Indeed. There was also another interesting moment earlier in the episode when Irene described Sherlock’s vicar disguise as his “self portrait”, saying that he was delusional, damaged and believed in a higher power — himself. Those three statements are incredibly interesting and hold more than a portion of truth, I suspect.

Funniest moment?

There were so many, but the one that gave me the most lol-ment, partly because it caught me off guard, was Sherlock belittling the ‘boomerang witness’ and then turning round to reveal that he was actually in the room at the time. I also have to mention the equal parts funny and sweet moment when Sherlock said England would fall if not for Mrs Hudsen.

Any other highlights?

Again, difficult to choose, but I loved the “????” when Sherlock tried and failed to read Irene. I also got a kick out of Sherlock and Watson becoming ‘Internet Phenomemons’. The whole Watson’s blog thing was fantastic (and another nod to technology playing an active role in the story). If I had to pick one more highlight, it would be the reveal of Irene’s password – “I’m SHER locked”. What a fun interactive game that was, while also showing Irene up to be a real fangirl.

You seem all on-board, any criticisms of the episode?

Of course. As I’ve already mentioned, it’s disappointing that there isn’t more of an overarching story as I think the show would be even greater for it. That said, I do appreciate the Moriarty thread, which isn’t to be sniffed at.

My other main criticism stems from the fact that Sherlock’s genius is so convincing that his fallibility is not always as convincing. There were a few occasions where I expected Sherlock to put 2+2 together but he either ended up with 0 or 6. Don’t get me wrong, I simply love the concept of exploring the fallibility of Sherlock, and I think that would make for a good arc, but the episode didn’t always do enough to illustrate the reason behind Sherlock failing to the dots (for example, why didn’t he realise Molly’s present was actually for him?). Obviously the story has to pull him back at times — that’s the point of deduction, but it’s an aspect that didn’t leave me fully satisfied. That said, I can fill in the blanks and put his lapses down to his arrogance or even the unusual emotions he was experiencing.

Where do Sherlock and Watson go from here?

We’re not dealing with a fully-fledged serial so I wouldn’t expect a tight overarching journey, but, as I said, I’d like Sherls to carry some of the weight from this episode with him. The ending was too ribbon tied for my taste but I enjoyed the twist — however ridiculous — leading to Sherlock defining the context of “The Woman”. Up to that point it could have gone either way, but ultimately he regards Irene with admiration, respect and love, and it was really nicely done. Of course, I’d also like to see Sherlock and Watson’s relationship continue to grow and undergo tests, and more Moriarty would be nice as he’s clearly driving the overarching threat.

Anything else?

Lots, but I’ll end by applauding the way this episode was filmed/edited. The writing and performances make this an exceptional show, but let’s not overlook the way it’s put together. What I find intriguing is that there’s a lot of description and rhythm to almost every scene — for example, Watson vs Irene at the power station; the framing, the ‘beats’ — just wonderful.

Sweet. Finally, I hear that some cheeky soul has started a twitter account for Irene Adler — The Whip Hand — as referenced by Sherlock in the episode. It already has over 4000 followers!?

For many fans the most interesting frame will be that of Sherlock standing on the “ROCKS” — alluding to the famous Reichenbach falls, where the character apparently met his end in Conan’s Doyle’s original telling (before he brought him back). Can our Sherls expect to meet the same fate? Co-creator Steven Moffat isn’t giving much away, but says they have “complete freedom to bend the storyline.”

Series 2 premieres New Year’s day, January 1st at 8.10PM on BBC1 and May 6 at 9PM on PBS.

Today, we have more Sherlock series 2 teases from co-creator Steven Moffat who also confirms the story threads that will develop over the course of the upcoming series. There’s also a new clip that captures Holmes’ incredible super powers in action.

While on BBC Breakfast, Moffat spoke about Holmes’ amazing super powers:

“Cleverness is his super power. He doesn’t fly, he’s not super strong, what he’s got is the fact he can look at somebody and tell everything about them. People like clever.”

He went on to tease Holmes’ new ‘non-love interest’, Irene Adler:

“It’s [like] two magnificent predators circling each other in a dark and terrible fascination, I think. [We call it an] unlove story, but it’s more complex than that, they’re fascinated by that.”

Moffat confirms that series 2 wont just comprise bow-tied installments. He describes some of the overarching story elements:

“There are threads that run throughout it; Moriarty will run throughout it and have a battle royale with Sherlock in the third of the films. [And] there’s a big battle between Sherlock and Moriarty in [the third episode] The Reichenbach Fall, and in the second one we’ve got our version of Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Series 2 premieres New Year’s day, January 1st at 8.10PM on BBC1 and May 6 at 9PM on PBS.

The inventive detective and his able side-kick are on form in two new sneak peeks from the Sherlock Series 2 opener, “A Scandal In Belgravia.”

But this case will cast a darker shadow over their lives than they could ever imagine, as the great detective begins a long duel of wits with an antagonist as cold and ruthless and brilliant as himself: to Sherlock Holmes​​, Irene Adler​​ will always be THE woman. Premieres Jan 1st on BBC1.

With the second round of Sherlock on the horizon, co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott (Sherlock Holmes, John Watson and Jim Moriarty, respectively), preview the upcoming series. There’s also some series 3 talk.

In a recent interview with the Guardian’s The Guide, the producers and cast laid on the tease for the coming series and Moffat offered his view on a possible third series.

While many view Sherlock as an emotionless being, Cumberbatch says the detective will gradually gain his humanity:

“[He's] slowly gaining a humanity, he’s on the side of the angels. His methods are definitely devilish, but he’s good at the core.”

Moffat concurs, saying that the challenges of the upcoming investigations will see the mastermind detective make some useful self-discoveries:

“On the journey that Holmes is on, he’s sort of realising that he’s not completely amoral. By meeting Moriarty he realises that he’s not evil.”

Andrew Scott is back for an expanded Moriarty role following his cameo at the end of the first series. While the portrayal wasn’t universally applauded, Moffat describes Scott’s performance as “terrifying” and explains some of the decisions that went into building the character:

“I asked him to do an Irish accent because Moriarty’s an Irish name and there’s never been an Irish Moriarty. He has this amazing ability to conjure up this sort of blank-eyed desolation of a man too clever, too clever to exist almost.

Scott, however, says he welcomes the mixed response:

“I hope you do get that sense in series 2 he continues to be someone that makes the audience think ‘Oh god, I don’t really know what to make of him.’”

The second series picks up right where the first left off, with Sherlock and Watson in a bit of a jam. With Moriarty’s snipers trained on the pair and Sherlock’s gun pointed at a bomb, Maffat and Gatiss are confident that fans wont be able to guess the outcome.

We already know that Holmes will have a series 2 love-interest in the form of Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), but what will Watson make of it all? Martin Freeman says that while Watson thinks it’s healthy for Holmes, he has some reservations:

“John thinks it would be much healthier if Holmes did have a relationship with a human being, as opposed to with a book or a theory or something. It’s just that Holmes happens to be falling in love with someone who is as insane as he is!”

As for a possible third series? Moffat implies that it will largely depend on the availability of Cumberbatch and Freeman:

“Well, there were 60 originals. We love doing this, it’s brilliant fun. So, as long as we can keep Martin and Benedict coming back…”

In related news, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat has confirmed that the BBC will indeed premiere the first episode — “A Scandal In Belgravia” –  on New Year’s day, January 1st at 8.10PM. He tweeted:

“Sherlock returns, Sunday,Jan 1st, 8.10pm, BBC1. First the woman, then the Hound and then, of course, the fall…”

The bit at the end makes reference to the episode titles. PBS has already set their Sherlock Series 2 premiere date for May 6 at 9PM.

The Beeb has also issued Sherlock Season 2 ‘Introduction’ interviews with co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who play Sherls and Watts, respectively.

Moffat compares the ground-breaking first series and the upcoming second:

“I think the first series was more about John Watson being redeemed from being a massively traumatised war veteran into a bit of a hero. This year it’s more about the forging of the mighty Sherlock Holmes.”

He also explains the thinking behind the second series and the different sides to Sherlock that will be explored:

“Well this year, knowing we were a huge hit, I suppose we felt let’s do the three big things, The Woman, the Hound and the Fall. Instead of making people wait years and years, we thought – to hell with deferred pleasure, let’s just do it now, more, sooner, faster!”

“That also means we see three different sides to Sherlock. We have Sherlock and love, Sherlock and fear and Sherlock and death. He definitely goes through the mill in this new series.”

Gatiss (who also portray’s Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft), sheds some light on the second episode of the new series, which he penned, “The Hounds Of Baskerville”:

“My idea for Baskerville was, as ever, to look for the ‘modern’. So rather than setting it in a spooky old house, I wanted to find the sort of thing that frightens us today. We’re still a very credulous species but we tend to be more afraid of secret goings-on and conspiracy theories. So I thought, what about a scary weapons research place out on Dartmoor? Where secret animal experimentation or something similarly terrible was taking place.”

“The reputation of the story was obviously a challenge, it’s the most famous and best-loved of them all. No pressure! At its heart, though, it’s a horror story and horror is a big part of the appeal of Sherlock Holmes. I wanted to make it the scariest version there’s ever been. Trying to work that out almost killed me!”

Cumberbatch talks about the relationship between Sherlock and Watson, and the detective’s new love-interest, Irene Adler:

“Yes, the last series played on [Sherlock and Watson's relationship] quite a few times, with two men living together, and so many people getting it wrong. But episode one presents a very definite female presence in the form of Irene Adler, and she is more than a match for Sherlock. It’s really nice to have a female counterpart.

“Irene Adler is someone who has an incredible amount of power. She’s very beautiful, very smart and intelligent, quick-thinking and resourceful. She’s got a lot of attributes that mirror Sherlock and she doesn’t suffer fools gladly, Steven and Mark are very clear though, this is Sherlock ‘and’ Love, not Sherlock ‘in’ Love. But viewers can expect a lot of flirtation!”

Cumberbatch teases direction of the new series:

“With series two we wanted to move the characters on, but at the same time you want to tick some of the boxes that made the first series so popular. Now, John and Sherlock are established as a team, there are still a few ‘I can’t believe he’s doing that’ moments, but on the whole they form a united front. The characters are evolving, and they’re facing some of their biggest challenges yet. I think if anything has changed, he (Sherlock) is gaining humanity.”

“I think the audience can expect three incredibly different films. The first episode is going to be about the heart, whatever that may be for Sherlock. The second episode is about horror and suspense and the third is going to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster and a thriller, so expect love, horror and thrills!”

Martin Freeman weighs in on what fans can expect from Watson:

“Well, John is not about to start doing deductions, but you kind of need John there, what he brings to ‘the game’ isn’t the same as Sherlock, but it’s kind of useful doing, as Mycroft says with disdain, ‘the legwork’. John can do different legwork to Sherlock, but he’ll do it all the same. It’s pretty much more of that really, I mean there’s only so much you can develop John’s role in the deduction because then it’s not Sherlock anymore. it has to be primarily about him, and that’s the only way to do it, with John as backup.

“All that I require, as an actor, and as an audience, is that it’s good backup, that it’s interesting and it’s three-dimensional, because otherwise I can’t see the point of being here, and I certainly wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t interesting.”

Sherlock Series 2 is set for early 2012

A new poster and photo for the second season of Sherlock has been released by the BBC.

Both images detect our protagonists front and central walking down a foggy London street. The names of this season’s story clues haunt the atmosphere, along with the faces of Sherlock’s potential love interest, Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), and the antagonist of the piece, Moriarty. The poster version is locked in the foggy outline of terrifying teeth.

Lara Pulver Teases Season 2 Sherlock Romance

As for what’s in store this season, GQ UK has published some Season 2 tidbits (thanks to Sherlockology for the transcription, visit link for more):

It’s the scariest Sherlock yet…

“There’s a big difference between the three episodes this year,” says co-creator Mark Gatiss, “and, of course, you can’t do Sherlock without admitting that people get killed. For me, The Hound Of The Baskervilles is one of the great horror stories that never quite delivers on its horror. So we [in a second episode ‘The Hounds Of Baskerville’, starring Russell Tovey] had a chance to go for it!”

…but also the closest to the original stories

“We’re taking elements of the books quite liberally this time,” says co-creator Steven Moffat. “It’s a magpie approach; another story may have a great idea that we’ll put in. But it’s quite overt; the short story ‘A Scandal In Bohemia’ becomes our ‘A Scandal In Belgravia’, the novel The Hound Of The Baskervilles becomes our ‘The Hounds Of Baskerville.’”

Sherlock gets a girlfriend!

Well, sort of. “It’s a non-love story,” says Moffat of “A Scandal In Belgravia”, where he meets Irene Adler (True Blood’s Lara Pulver). “But if one woman could claim him, it would be her. Not Sherlock in love, but Sherlock and love. In the stories, he’s not saying he doesn’t feel these things, but that he mustn’t feel them.”

Sherlock will use more tech

“One of the things we established last year is that Sherlock is always at the cutting edge,” says Gatiss. “Why wouldn’t he be? He’s not a fogey. He needs to be across everything. He’s the person hovering over his computer getting a Kremlin tan.”

Sherlock Season 2 is slated for early season 2012 on BBC 1 and PBS

As expected, Sherlock season 2 will anchor the PBS winter/spring schedule.

The much-anticipated second season of the BBC’s Sherlock — starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson — will premiere on PBS May 6 at 9PM.

The reimagined detective series is slated to premiere earlier in 2012 on the BBC.

“It’s a rare chance to do the early days of Holmes and Watson’s friendship, right from the beginning, so everything you know has not yet formed. Sherlock’s attitude to women and to crime is still forming, so it’s much more ‘plastic’.

The only heresy [about the show] is that it’s modern day, but after that it’s one of the most faithful versions there’s ever been, because Stephen (Moffat) and I just love it. Sherlock Holmes​ had become all about the hansom cabs and the fog, rather than about the friendship of this unlikely couple, but ours is very much inspired by the Basil Rathbone’s version.”

Speaking of her role in an interview with Digital Spy, Pulver said:

“I’m playing the infamous Irene Adler, and Steven Moffat has written an episode about Sherlock dealing with what love is, rather than Sherlock really knowing what being in love is, in the sense that we’re both playing mind games with each other. We’ve met our matches in each other.”

As for the level of romance between the pair, Pulver said, “it’s kind of deeper than romance. It’s kind of infatuation.”

Sherlock Season 2 arrives 2012

Mark Gatiss has revealed additional story details for the much-anticipated second season of Sherlock.

We already know that Sherlock season 2 will be based on versions of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Scandal In Bohemia, The Hound Of The Baskervilles and The Final Problem. But what else do we know?

Speaking at the Empire Presents: Big Screen TV Panel, creator/writer Gatiss outlined some of the broader story details:

“It’s a rare chance to do the early days of Holmes and Watson’s friendship, right from the beginning, so everything you know has not yet formed. Sherlock’s attitude to women and to crime is still forming, so it’s much more ‘plastic’.

While production on season 2 nears completion, filming was recently stalled due to the London riots, which had Gatiss tweeting:

“This is a new one on me. Scene incomplete owing to approaching looters. Unbelievable times.”

Sherlock returns in early 2012.

Riots on the streets of London has cut short filming of the BBC‘s second season of Sherlock today.

Co-creator Mark Gatiss tweeted his disbelief:

“This is a new one on me. Scene incomplete owing to approaching looters. Unbelievable times.”

It was recently confirmed that the second season of Sherlock has been pushed back to 2012 due to general filming delays.

Bad news for fans of the BBC‘s fresh and inventive take on Sherlock Holmes. The second season of Sherlock has been pushed back to 2012.

Confirmation that the series will not return until next year was announced at the end of last night’s Sherlock Season 1 finale replay.

Sherlock producer Sue Vertue later clarified on Twitter:

Please don’t blame the poor BBC schedulers for the wait for Sherlock. They can’t tx it till we deliver and we’re still filming – Sorry!

So it looks like a filming delay rather than a scheduling issue. Disappointing, no doubt, but if it’s as good (or better) than the first series, it should be worth the wait.

We’ll have a lot more Sherlock in the coming days, weeks, months.

“What they have in common is they both fetishize intelligence, they’re both incredibly clever men. But Sherlock Holmes is about telling people he’s clever, the Doctor doesn’t even care that he’s clever – he hardly notices, it’s forgotten about. It’s background noise for him, his brain is so big..”
