According to reports, FOX Broadcasting are lining up Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin to take charge of the TV series Terra Nova, which follows a family from 100 years in the future as they travel back 150 million years to prehistoric times. As we know, Spielberg has already ventured into this kind of territory with Jurassic Park and Lost World: Jurassic Park, so this series, should it get green-lit, could be well worth keeping tabs on.
Acording to Variety:
The 20th Century Fox TV project, which is said to have drawn special attention from Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Rice, would involve such elaborate sets and vfx that there’s been talk of greenlighting it directly to series production rather than a pilot because it would be too expensive to shut down and start up again during the downtime between pilot and episodic production.
Once the final producer pieces are sorted out, Fox and 20th are expected to begin shopping for a showrunner to get “Terra Nova” on its feet.
I’m not sure how I should feel about Terra Nova. I enjoyed Jurassic Park (the first one) and the prehistoric earth/time-travelling concept can never really get too old, can it? But movies such as The Flintstones and Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost movies have me weary of getting my hopes up. With Terra Nova being a TV series, I worry about the budget not being big enough to make it convincing, but time, and more information on the actual story, will tell. As I mentioned above, with Spielberg on board this one is well worth my interest.
