JJ. Abrams and Mark Schwahn‘s Shelter isn’t the only CW pilot pickup of note, the network has also scooped up two sci-fi/genre pilots with seriable potential — The Selection and Joey Dakota.
Here’s what we know about them:
The Selection
Based on the forthcoming series of books by Kiera Cass, it is described as an epic romance set 300 years in the future that centers on a poor young woman who is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads.
The Selection is from Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain and hails from WBTV.
Joey Dakota
A romantic time-travel musical based on the successful Israeli half-hour series Danny Hollywood. It centers on a documentary filmmaker who travels back in time to the 1990s, where she meets and falls in love with the rock-star subject of her film. When she unexpectedly returns to present day, she must find her way back to the past to reunite with her love and prevent his untimely death.
Joey Dakota is from Bert Royal with Mark Harmon executive producing.

The Selection has a distinct air of the The Hunger Games novel/movie about it. It’s not an original premise, but that can be said about a lot of pilots. The concept is, however, eye-catching with seriable potential, though it remains to be seen how much melodrama they go with.
Joey Dakota has a potentially intriguing time-travel hook with seriable prospects, but we’ll have to see how well the sci-fi element meshes with the ‘romantic musical’ elements.
Both pilots appear to offer something for serialized viewers — and something different from the usual CW fare, which I think is encouraging. The catch is, assuming these pilots make it to series, the CW’s more established serials like Nikita and Ringer might struggle to return in the fall.

The Selection is the first CW show I’ve heard of in a long time that interests me. I hope, if it continues into a full season order, that it will live up to expectations.
