The first-look at Mulan, one of the most intriguing new arrivals in the upcoming second season of ABC’s Once Upon A Time, has arrived online.

Portrayed by Jamie Chung, the legendary warrior originates from an ancient Chinese poem about Hua Mulan and was the first major casting announcement of Season 2 (Emilie de Ravin’s Belle aside). Here’s the first photo of the battle-ready Mulan below, courtesy TV Guide:

Chung has also provided some hints as to how her character plugs into the larger Once universe, noting her connection to fellow Season 2 newcomers Princess Aurora (Sara Bolger) and Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), she says:

“I go on a journey with Prince Phillip to find his princess, Aurora. There’s this evil spirit that’s moving and my character ends up bonding with Sleeping Beauty. And as you’ve heard, Captain Hook is joining us.”

Interesting in particular that she mentions Hook — that seems to suggest their stories will be interlinked, at least initially, and could be quite the mash-up. Hook has already been painted as a villainous character, so will Mulan be the protagonist she is in the classic tales? It seems like it. As for whether the sword is greater than the hook?:

“If you compare the size and length of my sword to his hook, who do you think has the longer reach?”

While both Mulan and Hook appear to be characters who don’t, or are unable, to practice magic, the mention of this “evil spirit” seems to provide a hint as to how they will be directly impacted by magic, both in the land that was and the newest magical realm on the map – Storybrooke. It could also make Mulan less of the protagonist, depending on how things play out.

Season 2 premieres Sept. 30 on ABC.
