The season 2 finale of Fringe left off with Olivia trapped in Walternate’s alternate universe cell of doom, while faux Olivia bandied on over to the other side with Peter and Walter – who were too busy worrying about their personal issues to notice that they were bringing an impostor back through the gate. Pretty compelling stuff, and as cliff-hangers go it was a right up there with some of the recent best.
Last night the first promo for the upcoming third season of Fringe aired, with new clips and everything! After I had soaked up the tease I was left wondering whether things are about to get a little more psychological for Olivia and company this season.
Head past the jump to watch the promo, which obviously includes season 3 Fringe spoilers.
The promo aired last night during So You Think You Can Dance and features old season 2 footage, sprinkled with new clips and voice-overs from the upcoming season. As you can imagine, the focus is on Olivia as she deals with her alternate universe imprisonment.
She looks like a prisoner of war who has been heavily drugged as her sanity is put under the microscope by a psychologist of some kind – who may or may not be purposefully messing with Olivia’s head at the behest of Walternate. Is he trying to drive her crazy in order to extract information about the other side, or does he have a deeper, more cunning, plan? Check out the dialogue:
“This is not my home”
“Because you come from another universe..does that sound just a bit…crazy?”
“I am not crazy”
There’s also footage of Olivia being chased as she escapes from her imprisonment, along with another voice-over:
Olivia: “Whatever they’ve told you, I’m not who you think I am”.
I suspect that she might be talking to her – or rather, faux Olivia’s – mother, who will be portrayed by Amy Madigan.
I really like this trailer. As I said it implies that the new season of Fringe will have a slightly more psychological, perhaps ‘twisty’ tone to it. I can already see them going to some amazing places if they’re bold enough. I also suspect that Walter and Peter (and perhaps Walternate?) will be given their own ‘centric’ promos in the build up to the premiere. It would only be fair. ![]()

I love Lance Reddick’s admission that the procedural aspect of the show just wasn’t working, was too clunky, and that JJ Abrams is all about telling a serialized story. I’m not sure what triggered this realization, since we’ve known since the show was announced that it needed to go all serial, all the time at the earliest convenience.
For all of JJ’s early protestations that “Alias” was the last straw for him and that “Fringe” would be all warm and inviting for the casual (read “part time”) viewer, I would love to hear JJ himself man up and admit that he either didn’t know what the hell he was talking about or that he was simply pandering to FOX to ensure that they would flash him the green light.
Either way, valuable time has been wasted getting us to where we are today and I hope Bad Robot goes pedal to the metal to make up for lost time and that we never have to use “standalone” or “freak-of-the-week” in discussions about “Fringe” again except when referring to the weakest elements of the first 1.5 seasons.

Needless to say, I totally agree!
As you say, I’m not sure what brought about Reddick’s realization, but it’s interesting that he decided to mention it now. I guess it’s a good sign, as I don’t think he’d be quite as open if S3 was embracing standalone episodes as readily as it was in the first season and a half.
