Serial Bites: Mob City Opens Soft, Breaking Bad & Other Serials Earn WGA Nods, More!

  • Something of an experiment for the (largely) procedural-geared TNT, Mob City opened its noir doors to soft ratings, pulling 2.29 million viewers for its first double-header with a 0.6 rating (801,000 viewers) in adults 18-49. Expect Mob City‘s numbers to increase as viewers find it via DVR/streaming (potentially binging all six episodes), though as a heavily marketed ‘limited event series’ the network would have targeted a higher live turn-out. We’ll see what happens.

I’m surprised about Mob City’s preliminary ratings. I agree that it should find a nice increase in the plus 7 and timeshifted plays. It is too good of a series not to find its audience. It is too bad that AMC was left with a bad taste in its mouth for Frank Darabont (when I too believe it was more of Robert Kirkman’s fault) when he left (was booted out of) The Walking Dead. I’m sure he burned some bridges there in his subsequent interviews about that instance. Anyway Mob City is more suited for an AMC than TNT.

As I have mentioned in other posts Mob City did a nice job with its pilot, and I personally will be returning next week and in the weeks to come.

It will however have a time stealing away live viewing from AHS Coven, and Criminal Mind’s/CSI on CBS. Not to mention Modern Family on ABC holding a significant portion of the target demographic.

Hey Rick, I got a chance to view Mob City last night, replayed on Bravo. I am on board for the series as well.

As for Frank Darabont’s exit from The Walking Dead, I think it is a matter of too many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the broth. and Robert Kirkman sabotaging the working relationship.

In an interview, Darabont was asked if he still watched TWD, and his words speak volumes…
““Oh god no, why would I? If the woman you loved with all your heart left you for the Pilates instructor and just sent you an invitation to the wedding, would you go?”

I am so glad that he has found a new way to channel his creative energy, and super-sized episodes to boot is a fantastic idea.
