Netflix has acquired exclusive worldwide streaming rights to crime series Marcella, which hails from Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of the original Swedish/Danish co-production The Bridge (Bron). The eight-part drama, sold by Cineflix Rights, premieres tonight on ITV in the UK and will be available globally, outside the UK and Ireland, on Netflix beginning July 1.
Marcella, produced by Buccaneer Media for ITV, is co-created by Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder and follows a police officer who returns to London’s Murder Squad after a 12-year break to take on an unsolved murder case from a decade earlier. The drama will bow on Netflix globally on July 1, outside of the U.K. and Ireland, where Marcella premieres April 4.
“We got involved with the series early on in the process to gain the opportunity to bring Hans’ great storytelling to our members around the world — right after its initial U.K. broadcast on ITV,” Larry Tanz, vp of global TV at Netflix, said Monday in a statement.
