Homeland has been off our screens for little over a month but already the Showtime thriller is sorely missed. Luckily, EP Alex Gansa has dished the show’s early season 2 plans, giving us something to chew on and speculate while we wait.
1. Time-Jump
Gansa reiterates previous suggestions that the second season will pick up some time after the harrowing events of the finale. This time-jump, Gansa explains, will allow Carrie and Brody to be in very different places by the time the story resumes:
“We have the ability now to jump time between seasons—so don’t be surprised if we don’t pick up the very next day.
By jumping some time, we’re going to be able to put our characters in different places than they have been this season. There will be a reset, probably after a jump in time, and both [Carrie and Brody] will be in very different places than they are now.”
2. New Blood
While not yet set in stone, Gansa suggests that new blood will enter the fray, particularly in the CIA side of things.
“I think we will bring some new characters in, especially to the CIA. But that’s really just in the gestating…we just don’t know what we’re going to do yet.
“I’ll tell you this: Robin Williams loves the show. So who knows? Can you imagine Robin Williams and Mandy Patinkin a scene together? That’s what I want to see.”

3. Carrie & Brody Remain Central
But two of our favorite serialized TV personalities of 2011 will remain the center-piece of the show in Season 2, Gansa promises:
“The center of season two will be the same as the center of season one, and that is the Carrie-Brody relationship. The reason why we decided not to kill Brody off in the finale is because that relationship hasn’t run its course yet. That’s what we always come back to—whenever we can intersect those two characters, that’s when we feel most alive as writers, that’s when the series really soars.”
4. Season 2 Storyline & Real-World Parallels
Gansa hopes the season 2 storyline will parallel real-world events:
“I think an election will be happening [as part of season two's storyline,] And the great thing is, an election [for U.S. president] will really be happening when we air. So it’s going to be a really wonderful confluence of events.” [Brody has a pretty wonderful campaign slogan courtesy of terrorist Abu Nazir:] Why kill a man when you can kill an idea?”
I’m thoroughly looking forward to Homeland Season 2. My only slight concern is that the show will have a lot more expectation to live up to when it returns, but judging by the first season and where they left off, there’s every chance we’ll get another incredible chapter.
