FRINGE: Jasika Nicole Teases Astrid-Centric Episode

This Friday’s Fringe sees something many a fan of the sci-fi serial had given up hope of witnessing — an Astrid-centric episode.

It’s been a long time coming for the fans, but also for the two Astrids, who have yet to meet in the fringe despite the two universe being bridged for quite some time. Jasika Nicole offers her thoughts on why the union of Astrids has taken so long:

“I think that because they’re solving these cases and trying to save lives and trying to protect these universes from being destroyed, any ounce of selfishness totally gets taken out of the equation. Who has time to spy on their doppelganger when hundreds of people are nearing death because some crazy vigilante is on the loose?”

Nicole notes that while Astrid might be somewhat “afraid” to meet her Other self – who the continuity buffs will note has Aspbergers like original timeline Altstrid – “I think that deep down inside, she would’ve loved to go over there to see her.”

However, as we’ll see on Friday, it’s Altstrid who makes the giant leap over there for what Nicole describes as “selfish reasons.”

These “selfish reasons” are fairly evident in the sneak peek released earlier this week, and look set to make the episode, titled “Making Angels,” an intriguing affair.

And I have to say, Nicole is spot on — who has the time to meet their doppelganger when the universe is falling apart? If only the characters showed the same level of awareness when deciding to dedicate serious manpower in hunting down Invisi-boi and other relatively minor procedurally-geared cases, while the shapeshifters and Jones are wreaking universe-level havoc. Just sayin’, the toggling from serial to procedural is something the show has, in my view, suffered from of late.

And hey, it’s a perennial question — how does a serial on a broadcast network satiate the central mythology/overarching story demands along with the procedural play-by-numbers that, unfortunately, are still a reality of network TV? Hopefully 2012 will take serialized TV one step to solving this great mystery.

But yes, “Making Angels,” Friday 9/8c. FOX.
