John Noble believes Fringe would have been cancelled after two seasons — before fully embracing its serialized potential — but for the show’s social media following.
Speaking to Assignment X, Noble, who played Dr. Walter Bishop in the sci-fi serial, observed how the show’s fandom helped keep the cancellation trapdoor closed:
I think that on Fringe, we were the first to find that out, just how it’s a maker or breaker. Because without question, I think social media kept Fringe going beyond the second season. That’s the importance of it, and not to be underestimated at any time. Because it gives everyone a say. You have an investment. I’m just a watcher sitting somewhere in Minnesota, but I can have my opinion and be responded to, so I’m invested in the show. That’s really amazing.
Despite (and due to) falling ratings, Fringe ultimately ran five seasons, achieving all-important closure.
