With the future of Fringe a hot-topic at today’s TCA, a few comments from showrunner Jeff Pinkner have emerged suggesting this season’s finale could work as a series finale, if necessary, and that the story could live on in other mediums.

On the question of how much of a head-start they’d need to wrap the series, Pinkner told TV Line earlier this week:

“The answer to that question is the same every year. Worst case scenario, if this were the last aired season of Fringe — and as we’ve said before, there are other outlets where we could continue our stories, be they graphic novels or webisodes — we know what the end of this season is going to be, and it can function as a series finale.”

Pinkner adds that last season’s dramatic ender could have served as a worthy conclusion to the series:

“Had Peter, the lynchpin for the reason the show existed, been the one to sacrifice himself heroically to save the two universes and the woman he loved, it would have been a very authentic end.”

Earlier today, FOX president Kevin Reilly said, in relation to the show’s future, that Fringe “has been a pride of point,” but “it’s s an expensive show and we lose a lot of money with that rating on [Friday] night. We’re not in the business of losing money. We need to figure out if there’s a [deal to be done with Warner Bros. that will] make business sense”.

Co-creator JJ. Abrams remains hopeful, while hinting that the show might be able to find a new home should FOX hit the eject button:

“For some sick reason I’m hopeful. There’s some stuff coming up this season that’s so great. Maybe it’s dumb optimism that the good work [of the Fringe showrunners] will be rewarded. And if not on Fox, maybe somewhere else.”
