FlashForward Clip Show – Actually Pretty Worthwhile

Against my better judgement I decided to watch ABC’s FlashForward Recap Show, titled What Did You See?, that aired last night. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. Clip shows are often painfully inept, even for the best television shows. However, I found the FlashForward “special” to be quite interesting – mostly because it reminded me that underneath the misfiring story, exists a show that still has huge potential.

Narrated by the dulcet tones of Courtney Vance (Wedeck) the recap does a good job at highlighting the best aspects of the show’s unfulfilled mythology. Particular highlights for me included: Simon’s involvement in the blackout (direct, or otherwise) and the overriding question of whether or not fate can be averted, nicely illustrated through FlashForward’s most emotionally engaging moment – Al Gough sacrificing himself for Celia.

Unfortunately, in showcasing FlashForward’s potential, they were unable to avoid reminding me of such disasters, like the Mark Benford character, the Blue Hand nonsense and the intelligence insulting ‘walk away from explosions without a scratch’ sequence – I had hoped that was just a bad dream and never happened! Seriously, if they pull a stunt like that again, FlashForward and I are done!

My conclusion? I think it’s definitely worth giving FlashForward another chance. The powers that be have promised to deliver the goods this time around, and it looks like ABC are trying to give the show every chance to hit the right note with viewers. We’ll see how it pans out.
