First-Look: See What Planet Carpathia Holds For The BBC’s Outcasts

We got just a tiny sneak peek in December. Today, however, the BBC aired the first trailer for their long-awaited sci-fi mini-series, Outcasts.

Set in the year 2040, Outcasts is the story of corruption and redemption and follows a group of pioneers faced with the chance to build a new and better future on the planet Carpathia. It’s always a ‘new and better future’, isn’t it?

The 30-second trailer sets the tone for the series whilst providing a look at several interesting points, such as the ship entering Carpathia, the beautiful landscape of the adventurers new home, and the possibility of a fresh start offset with conflict and a dash of mystery.

We’re really looking forward to this one, head past the jump to see what you make of the trailer.

Outcasts – First BBC Trailer

“Are there any human beings out there?”

The pioneers are led by President Tate (Liam Cunningham) and his core team of Stella (Hermione Norris), Cass (Daniel Mays) and Fleur (Amy Manson) – they took charge and settled here first alongside Expeditionaries Mitchell (Jamie Bamber) and Jack (Ashley Walters).

Here are a few of the key moments:

We get a quick glimpse of the pioneers ship, which appears to be breaking up as it enters Carpathia’s atmosphere.

A clearer look at the outside of the ship (or escape pod?) and one of Carpathia’s moons.

The trailer makes sure that we get a sense of Carpathia’s beauty and possibility it holds for the settlers.

"Do you really believe that human beings can live together in peace?"

And the dangers that lurk.

Well, that trailer certainly makes me even more excited for the arrival of Outcasts. It seems like we’ve been waiting ages for this one because it was originally thought that it would air in December 2010. For whatever reason that was pushed back – there’s still no official date, just a ‘coming soon’. Hopefully we wont have to wait too long given that we’ve now got a trailer.

By the way, would anyone happen to know the name of the song featured in the trailer? It sounds familiar but I can’t quite place it.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Settled in the town of Forthaven on Carpathia, the Outcasts are passionate about their jobs, confident of their ideals and optimistic about the future. They work hard to preserve what they’ve built on this planet they now call home, having embraced all the challenges that come with forging a new beginning.

They are led by President Tate and his core team of Stella, Cass and Fleur – they took charge and settled here first alongside Expeditionaries Mitchell and Jack.

They are a diverse group of individuals who left their old lives behind in extraordinary circumstances; promised a second chance at life they created a society, far away from their home, friends, family… and their pasts.

The planet offers the possibility for both corruption and redemption; while they try to avoid the mistakes made on Earth, inevitably our heroes cannot escape the human pitfalls of love, greed, lust, loss, and a longing for those they’ve left behind.

As they continue to work and live together they come to realise this is no ordinary planet… is there a bigger purpose at work? Mystery lurks around them and threatens to risk the fragile peace of Forthaven.

Outcasts is an eight-part drama series created by Ben Richards for BBC One. Coming Soon to BBC One and BBC America.
