ABC has released the final promotional cast photo for the final season of Lost.

But what are they all looking at? Head past the jump for a larger view.

Some stray thoughts:

• Some of the Losties appear to be looking at something on the horizon (some to the left, others to the right) – are they watching someone arrive, or perhaps leave the island? While a few of them are just looking aimlessly in front of them – Sayid and Kate spring to mind. Sayid I can work out – he’s “claimed” (or IS he?). But what becomes of Kate?

• I really didn’t think the Ajira plane would be such a big part of this final chapter. Just the thought of them flying off  in that thing seems ridiculous, but it looks as though the plane (and not the sub) will be at the heart of the bid to get off the island. This season has been all about symmetry, so I appreciate the mirrored quality of the plane device. Of course, not all of them want to leave the island – and I’m with Jack – or should we call him New-Locke City – on that one. It would be crazy for Jack to leave the island, after all he went through to get back!

• It’s good to see Ilana. As of 6.13 she’s still alive in the sideways timeline, but will we really see her on the island again? Perhaps as a ghostie, or something?

• Is Ben reading? Really, Ben?

• As cool as it is to have Frank around at this late stage in the game, it’s clear that his sole purpose for being here is the Ajira storyline (those one liners are stretching a bit thin). Whether or not they actually get to leave the island is another matter. I’m thinking that some of them might, although I think something supernatural will be involved – Ala their time-flashing arrival back to the island.

• There are not many eastereggs to be had in this photo, but at the same time that seems fitting. Simple. Reflective. The show itself has been the mystery to end all mysteries and the journey has been epic. I can’t believe it’s almost over..
