The 63rd Primetime Emmys were held in Los Angeles Sunday night, with several serialized TV shows amongst the winners.
Here are all of the serialized TV winners:
Supporting Actress In A Drama Series — Margo Martindale, Justified (FX)
Supporting Actor In A Drama Series — Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (HBO)
Outstanding Drama Series — Mad Men (AMC)
Directing in a Drama Series — Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Casting in a Drama Series — Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Here’s how the picture looked last year for our seriable shows:
Drama Series — Mad Men (AMC)
Actor in a Drama Series — Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series — Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Writing in a Drama Series — Mad Men (AMC)
Directing in a Drama Series — Steve Shill, Dexter (Showtime)
Something like parity, at least in terms of numbers. It’s worth nothing that Breaking Bad wasn’t available for this year’s awards due to the ‘delayed’ fourth season.
The Emmys are far from the be all and end all. The way I see it they are not the sole arbiter of quality, since far too many quality serialized shows and performances go unrecognized because they don’t fit a narrow specification. It’s becoming quite embarrassing on their part.
That being said, congrats to those above who did win gold, both for their own merits and the bigger picture. Hopefully long form, overarching storytelling can continue making inroads, opening the door for others.
In the meantime, those of us who enjoy and appreciate serialized TV need not look to the Emmys for validation. As our saying goes, “story continues,” and I’m sure they’ll catch on eventually.

As a Fringe fan, you know what I’m going to say… what a farce the Emmys are. Ignoring Noble John (Nimoy’s nickname for him) and The Torv, after awesome season three efforts, is disgraceful.
In any event I’m with George C. Scott on award ceremonies: creative efforts should not be a competition. And the ‘winners’ are just a matter of opinion.
I know I sound opinionated (but I don’t care, sorry), but for me the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys etc etc are meaningless fluff filled with self-congratulatory cliques. Even when somebody or some creative work I happen to like wins, it still means zippo to me.
Think about it: somebody else is telling you what’s the ‘best’. I have no problem with critiques on creative work, positive or negative, (I even enjoy it) but when some person or group appoints themselves as arbiters of what is the pinnacle, that’s absurd: it’s purely subjective.

Agree.
you know, “real is just a matter of perception”
“And the ‘winners’ are just a matter of opinion.”
Hey, that fits with Fringeology
I wasn’t going to watch at all until I found out Anna was presenting. So I muted pretty much the whole show until I saw her come out. She should have received one along with John Noble.
I don’t know if it’s an honor to be a presenter but it felt like a slap in the face. I know she’s been a presenter before in 2009.
Anyway, she did great and looked stunning.
4 more days, Fringies!

Woohooo Peter Dinklage/GOT! That’s great news. It looks like HBO is taking and I’m totally down with that. Game of Thrones and Eastbound & Down are two of the best television shows ever created (add FRINGE to that set and you have what are in my opinion, the three best right now by a looooong shot)
