After a very public negotiation process, AMC has reached an agreement with Sony Pictures TV to renew seriable favorite Breaking Bad for a final season of 16 episodes.
It’s thought that the episode will be filmed together but could be split into 2 seasons, with a final scheduling decision to be made further down the line.
As per Deadline:
The deal comes just as the series was facing two deadlines — its license deal with AMC was set to expire tomorrow and the options on the actors are up on Aug. 31. The two sides have reached a compromise over the stickiest issue – who will cover the series’ budget of $3 million+. I hear both Sony TV and AMC will contribute. With the series renewal secured, Sony TV now has to make a new deal with Breaking Bad creator/executive producer Vince Gilligan who doesn’t have a contract beyond Season 4. The cast, led by Emmy winners Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, may also renegotiate their deals.
Hands up who would like those episodes to be scheduled in one expanded final season? Though the chances of that happening are probably slim.
Hopefully everything works out with the remaining deals — it’s sad to think that Breaking Bad will soon join the likes of LOST in seriable heaven, but at fixed end date for a show as well written as Bad should provide the kind of conclusion that will stand up with the best of them. Fingers crossed.

Agreed. A show like this needs an end date.

I agree this show needs an end date but 5 seasons is just too short. And giving us some 8 episode divided half season nonsense is DEFINITELY a terrible idea. how about two 22 episode FULL seasons to end the series? Let us really get an in-depth look into these characters.
I’m really starting to dislike AMC with all this. They have the best line up on TV but it seems like they are making terrible business decisions with their writers/actors/producers, unless your Mad Men, of course.

i have to, respectfully, disagree with you.
If Vince Gilligan & TPTB think that 5 seasons of this glorious show is enough to fully tell the story(beginning, middle, & end), then i am all for it.
I wouldnt want to have the story get stale and drag its feet (remember s3 of LOST?) before finally starting to end.
Being as critically acclaimed and as relatively high rated (for a cable show) as it is, if Gilligan wanted to do more he probably could have, but he probably feels like the end of the story he envisioned is approaching and wants to go out on top.
