Today, we have an audio interview with Doctor Who EP Steven Moffat and Matt Smith who discuss a range of Who-related topics, including: the Christmas special; series 7; the 50th anniversary show; the Doctor Who movie; Smith’s future as the Doctor; and more.

Before news broke that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill would be leaving Doctor Who after series 7, Richard Bacon interviewed Moffat and Smith for 5 Live. Among the topics discussed:

  • Mark Gatiss back to write an episode for series 7
  • The Christmas Special
  • The recovery of two old Doctor Who episodes
  • Series 7
  • The 50th Anniversary show
  • Matt Smith’s future as the Doctor
  • Quantum Leap’s Sam Beckett Vs The Doctor

Moffat also moved to further clarify the Doctor Who movie situation, reiterating his recent claim that it wouldn’t, in fact, be a continuity ducking reboot:

“David (Yates) was talking a little out of turn, there; a very, very brilliant director but no the film as described by him, of course we’re not going to do that – a film that contradicts the television series, it would be a heathen thing to do.. I would be ‘beheaded’ to do such a thing!

It would be wonderful to do a Doctor Who film, but when and if we did – and hopefully we will be doing it – it will be very much an offshoot of the television series and we’ll be part of it, and it will star the television Doctor, of course – anything else would be heresy!”
