Could Amy and Rory Pond leave Doctor Who earlier than thought? Could Adrian Lester be the next Doctor?

We already know that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving Doctor Who in Series 7, but details on the Ponds’ departure is, quite rightly, a closely-guarded secret.

However, speaking at press tour over the weekend, the actress said she’d only be in a few episodes next series:

“There’s going to be a few episodes. A few really good episodes.”

Might this suggest an earlier than expected departure for Amy (and Rory), perhaps leaving mid-way through Series 7, essentially creating a “heart-breaking” climax before the introduction of the new companion in the second-half?

She also spoke about about her feelings on leaving the long-running series:

“I feel sad,” she said of saying goodbye to the role of Amy Pond, “because I am gonna leave, but with any story, it has to come to an end. It was a mutual decision with me and (‘Doctor Who’ showrunner) Steven Moffat. We had this lovely dinner and decided when the best time for me to go was, and it’s been decided. So I’m excited and slightly scared.”

Meanwhile, Hustle actor Adrian Lester has revealed that he’s had “conversations” about becoming the next Doctor. Speaking on Radio 2, he said:

“I’ve had chats with my agent about it. We’re going to-and-fro about considering it. Not that it’s on my lap to consider, but any actor offered that role would.

“It’s a gem of a role and it’s got a long history. We keep having conversations about it.

“Anyway, it’s up the air…”

Current Time Lord Matt Smith recently said:

“I am very happy to stay. I love it and love making the show. I’ll miss Karen because she’s my best mate. She’s mad as a box of cats but she’s a firecracker!

There comes a time when a story reaches its conclusion and the essence of the show is that it constantly reinvents itself”
