Following the two-pronged twist to Dexter‘s sixth season, the show will enter its new chapter with plenty of buzz. Exec producer Manny Coto was on hand this week to share some early Season 7 plans.
In case you missed it, or need a recap on how the sixth season of Dexter unfolded, read our in-depth review and afterthoughts!
Bloody-Disgusting caught up with Dexter EP Manny Coto at the Television Critics Association in a cocktail reception, and he spilled some teasing clues for the direction of Dexter Season 7.
On where Season 7 will pick up, and the possibility of more time-jumps:
“We’ve discussed maybe jumping forward and flashing back, we’ve discussed picking up right afterwards. We don’t know yet. One advantage [to picking up immediately] is you’re able to play the emotion forward. There’s an advantage to jumping ahead and doing flashbacks but then you’re trapped in flashbacks and the audience spends a lot of time catching up. That can be good because you’re setting up a mystery but at the same time, there were advantages to just picking up where you left off and going forward so you’re with the characters as you go.”
Coto reiterates Showtime president David Nevin‘s suggestion that the story could continue beyond the recently picked-up seventh and eighth seasons:
“[This story direction is not an indication of wrapping up]. It’s more part of keeping things fresh. We actually had no idea whether we were going to go two years or four years, what have you when this decision was made. Right now we’ve been renewed for two more but that could go on, who knows? It’s hard to tell. So it really wasn’t looked at as an endgame. It was more of an evolution of “Dexter”‘s life as a killer, as a father and as a brother.”

While the direction of the upcoming season is yet to be cast in stone, Coto is interested in bringing the ensemble into the central story more than they have been in previous years. The peripheral (and often inconsequential) function of the supporting characters is something that helped land Quinn a spot in our Most Disappointing Serialized TV Characters of 2011 list. Coto says:
“Personally I would tighten it up but we may get into the writer’s room and go a different course. The fun of it is she’s running the department. By her keeping her mouth shut, if she does, the boss is now holding a secret from her fellow cohorts. Batista and Quinn and everyone around her, having to keep a secret from all of them makes this a much more fun and dynamic place. It’s now a series about a serial killer who works for Miami Metro but whose sister is now the head of Miami Metro and knows he’s a serial killer. It’s a fascinating dynamic for us to explore.”
Perhaps too fascinating for the writers not to explore? Looks like we might just have a handle on the direction they may take with the Debs/Dex story next season (i.e. Debs keeping Dex’s secret secret) — but as mentioned it’s all still up for grabs.
Finally, on the topic of the Season 7 Big Bad, Coto says discussions haven’t gone beyond the preliminary stage, but implies that much depends on the direction they take with Debs, and her secret to end all secrets:
“We don’t know yet. It’s too early. We’ve had preliminary discussions. Whoever it is will be someone hopefully that really puts the pressure of Debra and her knowledge of “Dexter”, that informs that dynamic we’ve set up.”

This WAS my favourite show, but now it is no longer as amusing; the dark humour is gone and basically we have a “father” who is a serial killer. *Yawn* Give us back the Brilliance of Series 1 & 2! The ability to laugh at the darker jokes that were still being told in Series 3. Adding of course the Amazing acting from the Guest Star is Series 4!
In other words: The last two Series were bordering on B-O-R-I-N-G. Dull in fact.
Yes, there will be traumatic scenes to still play out (listening to those horrid video’s in Series 5), but by the gods: Don’t forget the dark humour! Don’t forget the roots of the show and what made it good. In fact I only watch now out of stubborn loyalty, hoping against hope that the show will pick back up…
Allow me to confess: Series 6 was more than a bit shite!
*Laughs without humour*
Alright it was the worst Series yet. It made me want to throw something in frustration because you cannot help wondering: Is this show Ever going to get back on form? Or has it completely lost it’s edge?
Sadly, the last was the ‘winner’.
And that weird sister-storyline: Some people may be “shocked”, but if you didn’t see this as a last ditch effort from a mile away you seriously had not been watching the show! On top of that it’s not even halfway interesting.
Have all the writers from Series 1 & 2 retired?
Writers: Give the fans something more than a dismal series filled with bad plot-lines that make us all want to sleep through the episodes. Give us all something to actually watch with interest. Something to be fascinated by once again. Not this shite pulled out of desperation to keep the show on air after it has lost all ability to actually tell a decently disturbing story.
