Crystal Meth Vs Zombies – Breaking Bad Vs Walking Dead

Two of the shows we are most looking forward to feasting our eyes on during the course of the new television season are both AMC properties. The fresh out the box, Walking Dead, and the returning Breaking Bad.

Earlier this summer, MTV caught up with frequent Breaking Bad director Michelle MacLaren – who has also directed episode 2 of The Walking Dead, to find out what parallels the two shows share.

MacLaren points out that with Breaking Bad, Walter White “finds himself in situations he wouldn’t normally expect to find himself in,” and that both shows deal “with characters who’s worlds are turned upside down, so in that respect, there are some similarities.”

MacLaren also compares the styles of the two shows, explaining that when it comes to Walking Dead, “style-wise it’s very tight and frenetic and active. But I think there are some similarities from what I’ve seen. I’ve been looking at some of the dailies and it seems that Frank (Darabont) has really taken the time and the pace were it is required, which is very much a Breaking Bad style, and very much a feature style, which is very true to AMC.”

It’s really pleasing to hear MacLaren point to the long-form narrative of Breaking Bad as being one of the notable similarities between the two shows. It speaks to the level of detail and authenticity that Vince Gilligan and his staff deliver on that show. If Walking Dead can incorporate those elements while keeping the action poised and ready to strike at any moment, then it’s going to make for such an enjoyable experience.

The Walking Dead begins on AMC with a 90 minute premiere episode, Sunday, October 31st.
