Continuum is a new Canadian cop show with an overarching serialized twist, coming to Showcase, Sunday, May 27. Take a look at the series and find out what creator Simon Barry has to say about the show’s series-spanning story arc.

How far would you go to save the future? That’s the question that bonds the high-concept time-travel element of Continuum to the character story it hopes viewers will invest in.

Continuum, starring Rachel Nichols (Alias), is described as:

A one-hour police drama centered on Kiera Cameron, a regular cop from 65 years in the future who finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver. She is alone, a stranger in a strange land, and has eight of the most ruthless criminals from the future, known as Liber8, loose in the city.

Lucky for Kiera, through the use of her CMR (cellular memory recall), a futuristic liquid chip technology implanted in her brain, she connects with Alec Sadler, a seventeen-year-old tech genius. When Kiera calls and Alec answers, a very unique partnership begins.

Series creator Simon Barry offers his view on what Continuum holds for viewers:

It’s about a group of revolutionary terrorists from the future who are facing execution, so they pull a prison break. Instead of going through the wall they set off a bomb that is a wormhole and they travel back sixty-five years to 2012. A police officer who happens to be in the execution chamber with them, also comes along for the ride unintended. The story takes place from her point of view – the policewoman’s point of view as she tries to stop these terrorists from not only changing history, but also starting their revolution in our time.

As for the sort of seriability intrepid viewers can expect to find in Continuum — expect both procedural and serialized story:

I think it’ll attract people that like TV. We have elements of a typical police show that appeals to anyone who watches any police show. We have some good character relationship stories that I think would appeal to anybody. We have this displacement, fish-out-of-water situation for one of our characters that’s unique and we also have a big science fiction mythology that wraps around everything and keeps the serialized part of our series alive and kicking hopefully to season ten.

The serial-procedural experiment has yielded mixed results this season (see Alcatraz, vs Person Of Interest for example – though the latter has certainly benefited from more time to find its way), so the big question will be whether Continuum can successfully combine both formats, while establishing the world of the story. However, with the promise of fully-rounded characters and a larger serialized mythology spanning the series, Continuum looks promising and has our attention. Let’s see where this goes..

Interesting… It certainly has a quirky element, but there seems to be plenty of menance on hand, courtesy of the ‘wish fulfilment’ that the apartment building apparently provides — at a cost. There’s a deeper ‘good versus evil’ premise at the center of 666 Park Ave, so that should provide the overarching hook. Time will tell how far the show will go in the seriable stakes, but this is one we’ll be keeping an eye on.

The procedural element seems pretty nailed on, with serial killer Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) army of followers lending the story to self-contained ‘killers of the week’. But there does appear to be a more complicated, personal, ongoing story in-play. We’ll find out more over the coming months, but fingers crossed, serial kills. Should be interesting to see how it fares against Hannibal — NBC’s midseason serial killer offering.

I looks good and plenty seriable. The central mystery and character journey both look to have potential. I’m pleased a story like this is getting made for the so-called ‘small screen’, though it remains to be seen whether this story can distinguish itself in the long run from others like it.

It will also be interesting to see if and how they maintain Jon Favreau’s cinematic eye throughout the series. Small thing: the logo incorporating the universal power symbol (technically the ‘standby’ symbol) — nice touch.

It seems like the universe conflict ends here — in a moment — propelling the story into a slightly different direction for the final season. PERCY THREATENS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES – Percy (Xander Berkeley) calls the President the United States (guest star Cameron Daddo) and threatens to set off a nuclear explosion unless his demands are met. Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford) finds two scientists who could help stop Percy’s new nuclear satellite, so Nikita (Maggie Q) and Michael (Shane West) head after one and Sean (Dillon Casey) and Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) look for the other. Unfortunately, Alex and Sean get caught at the very location that Percy blows up as an example of his power. Meanwhile, Nikita realizes the best way to stop Percy is to go into the belly of the beast — Division itself. Danny Cannon directed the episode written by Andrew Colville. Airs May 11.
