While there has been a growing number of horror-coated serialized TV shows of late, would Frankenstein work as an ongoing TV series?
It’s a question worth considering following the news that House executive producers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner are developing the classic horror tale Frankenstein for NBC.
As reported by EW, there are no other details at this stage except that this will be a modern-day take on the story.
So we don’t know whether they plan on making it seriable or going for the more stand-alone approach. A serialized format would be more challenging, but also more rewarding. There are plenty of interesting character and mythology aspects they could develop over time, should they lurch more towards the former.
Take a look at the following footage from the 1931 classic to get a sense of what elements they could play with if they made a ‘seriable’ modern-day Frankenstein:
We’ll keep tabs on the project (it’s only a script deal at the moment) and let you know if we hear anything of overarching interest.

They could go for an adaptation of the movie, but I think that it would be more rewarding if they’d go for an adaptation of the novel.
Sadly, Frankenstein is not an ongoing story. It’s just one novel, and not a very long one at that.
But I would be interested to see the result either way.
