BREAKING: ALCATRAZ Picked Up For Series – UPDATE

UPDATE: Alcatraz has been picked up.

This is great news for those who have been hoping that Alcatraz would be picked up to series by FOX. Minutes ago, Variety reported that the network has given series orders to the Warner Bros. TV drama from JJ. Abrams and Elizabeth Sarnoff.

It was only last week that we wondered whether Fringe has sunk it’s sibling’s chances of going to series due to rumors that execs had gone cold on the project, and would consider another sci-fi show as one too many. So this news is a bit of a surprise, but we’ll take surprises as Alcatraz is one of our most eagerly-awaited shows of the year.

Fringe AND Alcatraz both on FOX? Along with Terra Nova, you’d have to consider FOX has being the place to be for some of the boldest Seriable television next season.

Here’s another look at the description for Alcatraz:

Alcatraz focuses on a group of missing Alcatraz prisoners and guards who suddenly reappear in the present day. It follows the investigations of a team of FBI agents to track them down and unravel the 30 year mystery of their disappearance.

We’ll have more updates to come.

What are your thoughts on the Alcatraz pickup?

I had mixed reactions when I heard the news. On the one hand, I was quite surprised, simply because I figured FOX literally had no room on their schedule for Alcatraz. But, at the same time, considering it’s a J. J. Abrams show, it stood a pretty good chance of getting picked up because any network would be foolish to pass on giving a J. J. show a chance to succeed.

Personally? I don’t have any high expectations for Alcatraz and time will tell if it has what it takes to survive in this competitive environment. And it takes a lot. Just ask Fringe, which is (in my personal, though admittedly biased, opinion) serialized television at its best, yet somehow only manages to hold on by a thread. I can’t figure out why that is. At any rate, Alcatraz has a tricky path in front of it and there is little room for error. I’m glad that it has been given the opportunity to prove itself, but I’m skeptical towards believing it will actually pull it off.

Really would like to see the good shows remain on tv so can get something good to watch on my computer since we live up where tv is out of the question still without satellite. Alcatraz, the finder, and terra nova are some shows we loved watching and fox is going down hill since house is gone too. I believe fox will end its station this way.
