The blue butterfly first seen in the Believe pilot is turning out to be one of the show’s most intriguing overarching mysteries. Not only are butterflies highly symbolic of transformation, the soul and omens (things relevant to Believe), but tie into Bo’s past, present and future.
Believe Butterfly Sightings
The blue butterfly Tate sees in the pilot (above) symbolizes his connection to Bo and foreshadows the butterfly stickers on Senga’s guitar (screencap below). Like Bo’s song, this gives further credence to Bo’s abilities of foresight – specifically, in this case, her prediction that Dr. Terry would save Senga’s life – and perhaps the natural order of things.
Note: Tate seeing the butterfly initially raised the question of whether he has latent abilities – a suggestion somewhat debunked in Episode 3.
The third episode, “Origin,” offers more clarity on the butterfly as Nina, Bo’s mom, can be seen wearing a blue butterfly necklace prior to her death 10 years ago.
Ten years later, the butterfly appears to Bo, giving her insight on how to help a woman named Leona reunite with her estranged son.
Seems the butterfly could be a projection of Nina (her soul) who’s returned in the form of her favorite insect to assist Bo and Tate in their trials. As Bo says in the episode – “There’s no such thing as coincidences”.
The butterfly appears in “Defection”, sending Bo on quest to deliver a message lost in transit several years ago.
We’ll keep this page updated with all blue butterfly sightings/details, so check back for updates.
