AWAKE: 2-Hour Season Finale — Early Story Details & Wild Speculation

The early story details are in for the two-hour season finale of NBC’s Awake. Seems as though the first season will do what it promised, while blowing open the larger conspiracy in “Two Birds” and “Turtles All The Way Down”.

1.12 “Two Birds” / 1.13 “Turtles All The Way Down” (May 17, 2012):

As Britten starts to realize the truth behind the accident, a conspiracy threatens both of his realities; Britten goes after Detective Hawkins; Dr. Lee and Dr. Evans come together in a debate that forces Britten to choose a path.

“Dr. Lee and Dr. Evans come together..” So, the obvious question here is: which world does this take place in, and who scratches who’s eyes out first? Half joking. Also, “Two Birds” seems to contain double meaning in relation to the duelling therapists and Britten’s beloved partner. Interesting.

For those wanting a bit more possible insight on the title for the second part of the finale, “turtles all the way down” is likely borrowed from a phrase popularized by Stephen Hawking‘s 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which begins:

A well-known scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.” The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, “What is the tortoise standing on?” “You’re very clever, young man, very clever,” said the old lady. “But it’s turtles all the way down!”

This seems to go hand in hand with the ‘chicken and egg‘ questions we’ve been asking: which of Britten’s two realities came first? Moreover, it seems to support the idea that Britten’s condition is akin to alternate dimensions, perhaps more than two. If Britten’s green world is supported by the red world (say), then what supports the red world? Is it turtles all the way down..?

That’s all speculation for how the title might tie into the episode. It’s worth noting that the producers have already said that one reality is the dream, and not both. It should certainly be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

@GFS – not yet. Hopefully NBC has enough faith in the show to bring it back. The ratings may need an uptick, but fingers crossed.

it has now, unfortunately, been officially cancelled. After season one finales, the show will be gone for good. NBC was too money grubbing to keep faith in a show with low ratings.
