Marvel are looking to take the mythology of the Avengers to the small screen, according to reports.
If there’s one thing the Avengers movie lacked it was character development. Which is why news that Marvel are looking to explore an Avengers TV series intrigues us here at Seriable. An Avengers project with serialized elements would be interesting for a variety of reasons.
Sure, there’d have to be trade-offs in terms of visual scale and effects, but with so much to gain from a continuous, developing narrative, it’s no wonder Marvel, whose movie line-up for the next few years looks awesome, want to get in on the ‘small screen’ action. (of course, I’m talking with serial in mind as an episodic Avengers makes little sense to me).
As for details: Deadline understand that Marvel’s TV division is in conversation with ABC and ABC Studios about the prospect of creating a drama series in the ‘Avengers universe’.
As for what such a venture would mean for characters, themes and ‘canon’? The connection to into the Avengers franchise “would only be be light” and while the project is expected to be set in the same universe, it may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s film.
While this is exciting news and leaves room for many other characters in the Marvel universe to step up and take center stage, we should stress that the project is still at an embryonic stage, described as “a kernel of an idea,” with a variety of scenarios being explored, including a high-concept cop show (less exciting).
Marvel are looking to gain a foothold in the primetime and has developed the Hulk series for ABC which is still in development and looking for a new writer to pen the project, so it’s a case of ‘watch this space’.
And watch it we shall. We’ll keep you updated on Avengers TV Show developments should they happen.
