American Horror Story has found its pivotal Season 2 player in French actress Lizzie Brocheré.

Brocheré will play Gia, Jessica Lange’s nemesis, in the upcoming second season of the FX frightener.

The original casting notice described Gia as a fierce, formidable, extremely sexual, and dangerous wild-child who harbors a secret — in other words, “Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted.”

According to a show insider, the role has “been changed considerably” since the casting call went out, though they declined to elaborate.

AHS‘ serial-anthology format dictates that Season 2 will feature an all-new story (set in a horror institution on the East Coast), with all-new characters. That said, there have been rumblings of an overarching storyline connecting Season 1 with subsequent seasons, with co-creator Ryan Murphy admitting that Constance’s fourth child could come back into play at some point:

“We know who the fourth child is, it was something that we had written and talked about and removed. But we have not lost sight of the fourth child. In a fun show like this, that could be Season 4, I don’t know. But we do have that story and that’s something we’d talked about. That was the one thing that we did not answer but we want to answer that. We will eventually deal with that, even though Jessica is not playing Constance.”

Until that happens, serial purists will have to make do with the serialized nature of individual seasons as opposed to grand, sweeping story arcs that span the series. To be fair, with so much choice out there, the AHS format is worth embracing for what it is, even though some of us might shudder at the thought of the ‘do over’ come finale time.
