Alphas has a new showrunner in the shape of Bruce Miller.
Miller will run the series in season 2. He replaces Ira Steven Behr who is departing after running the show in its first season. Whether he was pushed or left of his own accord has not been stated, though I didn’t expect him to leave the show at this stage.
Miller will serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Zak Penn and BermanBraun’s Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. Miller is no stranger to Syfy, he most recently served as an executive producer/showrunner on the network’s series Eureka, which closed production on its fifth and final season last month.
It will be interesting to see how this change influences the direction of Alphas, which had a largely procedural format in its first season. Miller wont be alone in shaping the show, but you have to think a new showrunner will bring in his own ideas to the existing story.
Whether this includes a more seriable approach, we can only hope. The season finale opened up the show’s central story, but knowing Alphas, it could just as easily crawl back into its procedural shell come season 2.
We’ll see how it all develops over the coming months.
