Monday’s fourth peek into the Alcatraz mystery box introduced ‘Traz fans to a mythology item we’re calling: The Big Heavy Door (or BHD).
Just what IS behind the BHD?
To refresh, let’s go over what the warden said to Harlan before he ushered him through the BHD:
Harlan: “Where are you taking me?”
Warden: “To meet a friend. Your recent palace coup has caught the eye of a certain subterranean resident, who desires to have a parlay. Your future just got a heck of a lot bright, kid. Don’t be shy.”
Things worth noting:
- The keys the warden used to open the BHD are NOT the same as those Hauser retrieved from Jack Sylvane and Cal Sweeney (see screencaps in our Observations article). Whether this is a prop error or not remains to be seen.
- There appears to be light emanating from the room, in accordance with the warden’s comment about Harlan’s future getting “a heck of a lot brighter.”
- The warden (possibly) has a thing with light: the ’5 matches’ scene with Kit Nelson, now the ‘brighter future’ comment.
- This “subterranean resident” seems to get what s/he or it desires and has a watchful eye on prison events.
- Harlan’s “palace coup” (i.e moving in on Sweeney’s operation) has impressed the resident, or at least stimulated the resident’s interest in a parlay (accumulator bet).
- As noted by Seriable reader Belle, the BHD appears to be the ‘under the hole’ that Tommy Madsen referred to in the Pilot.
- A figure can almost be made out in the reflection on the warden’s glasses (though that’s possibly much about nothing).
With all that said, who or what do you think is behind the BHD?
Could it be Anthony Cooper from LOST:

Or, more seriously, could it be another inmate or a Rock Resident who pre-dates the prison? Are we talking aliens or perhaps the BHD simply leads to a BER — Big Empty Room?
