Melissa Rosenberg has confirmed that AKA Jessica Jones takes place in the larger cinematic Marvel Universe, giving the project some leeway to incorporate iconic characters in the potential series.

The former Dexter writer and producer told Hitfix that the potential NBC series lives in the same universe as characters like Iron Man and Thor, but is well aware that they wont be able to reference everything.

“It’s very tricky navigation there. You can’t mention one guy because Fox has the rights to that guy and Universal has the rights to the other one.  There are a lot of boundaries on who you can and can’t use. I had Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and Carol Danvers [for the pilot script].  Basically, I wanted those three guys — then I would have a series. Everyone else we can be digging into lesser known characters or taking known characters and renaming them.”

“As we go along things will alter in terms of what is made available to us, but we’re definitely in that universe. We are in no way denying that that universe exists. And as much as I can I’m going to pull everything in from there that I can use.”

I find this very exciting as it opens up many, many potential storylines while immediately giving the pending series a large and alluring sandbox to play in.

Of course, I don’t expect to ever see the likes of Iron Man if the series goes ahead, but to be able to draw from that universe and possibly  reference major and lesser known Marvel characters/mythology, along with the brand new, gives AKA Jessica Jones an interesting canvass to work from. I’m also thinking: EASTER EGGS!

And I’m certainly not discounting the ‘Jessica Jones’ story itself, everything will hinge on how compelling that is — Rosenberg assures it will be “so much darker than ‘Wonder Woman” –  but it’s nice to know that a universe awaits.

That said, there’s a long way between now and the potential series powering-up (Rosenberg is targeting next fall). NBC’s abandoned Wonder Woman never felt right from the get-go, but hopefully this superheroine will fare better? So far, so better. We’ll see how it all comes together.
