[tps_title]#11: ALMOST HUMAN (Season 1)[/tps_title]
“I’m not like them”
Mourning fans of Fringe asked, and FOX responded. Lord of the Rings and Star Trek actor Karl Urban, alongside big names such as Lili Taylor, Michael Irby and Game Of Thrones and Pirates of the Caribbean star Mackenzie Crook, all together in a new science-fiction TV show produced by J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman. That description alone should make any geek drool with enthusiasm. The big surprise here is Michael Ealy, who plays the “almost human” android Dorian with great subtlety and expression. The chemistry between him and Urban’s “almost robotic” Kennex is present from the start, and it’s one of the things that makes the show such a joy to watch.
As we should be getting used to from Abrams, Almost Human is a familiar format with a unique twist: a buddy cop show set in 2048 – a time where all police officers are partnered with expensive, human-like androids (that seem to get destroyed every other week). With its great looking CGI effects and set design, it sure feels like the show takes place in a futuristic world. The first six episodes – the ones that aired in 2013 – were not as serialized as one might hope; in fact, FOX felt confident enough to broadcast the first episodes of the show out of order. But if we are to believe Wyman, things are about to change in that department. Almost Human has great potential, and I expect the show to rise higher on this list next year.
