“It’s good to have you home.”
***MAJOR SEASON 1 SPOILERS AHEAD***
Bloodline is one of two family dramas on this list involving the undesirable homecoming of a main character. Three, if you count Sansa Stark’s on Game Of Thrones. The black sheep on this particular show is played by the terrific Ben Mendelsohn, who turns an already well written character into a fully realized, relatable human being. Mendelsohn’s Danny Rayburn is funny, tragic and scary all at the same time. A misunderstood man who doesn’t fit in with his rich, esteemed family; the perfect recipe for a true villain, and one of the most convincing ones of the year because his actions are perfectly understandable (for the most part)…
Flashforwards sprinkled in throughout the season reveal a major twist that inserts tension and dread into every moment. Like Rectify, Bloodline is a slow burn that turns utterly compelling thanks to its great cast, including performances from Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek and Norbert Leo Butz.
One tiny issue with the show’s first season is the simple fact that it all revolves around the death of its strongest character. It has reached its shocking, inevitable conclusion already. A second season couldn’t possibly be as good… Or could it?
