KEEPING TRACK OF BEN’S LIES
- “She got sick” – Henry Gale tells Sayid that his wife died of some sort of sickness. This ties in well with Rousseau’s story about the death of her husband. The timing works very well, too: in the episode following this one (Maternity Leave), Aaron will fall ill for no apparent reason besides being a baby. Fortunately, Aaron is fine by the end of the hour. Unless you’d count the Man In Black’s ”possession”, there’s no evidence that the sickness Henry talks about actually exists on the island.
- It’s worth pointing out that the people ”unstuck in time” in the show’s fifth season showed signs of fever and (a form of) delirium; the symptoms Henry describes to Locke and Sayid.
- “Where am I?” – We find out in Exposé that Ben knew about the Swan station before he was caught. He used the Pearl feeds to watch the survivors, and was planning to convince Jack to do surgery on him at that time already. In fact, he was already planning to capture Michael and use him to bring the survivors to the Pala Ferry. This means he probably knew that Michael would eventually be willing to trade Ben for Walt. With this short scene in mind, it would seem even more plausible that Ben got caught on purpose. He would have had his escape planned before his imprisonment (!), and it would give him the chance to get to know the survivors – mainly Jack and Locke – personally.
Ben: “I can convince [Jack] to do [the surgery]. Same way I get anybody to do anything: I find out what he’s emotionally invested in and I exploit it.” (Exposé)
- ”I was rich” – It’s revealed in season 4 that Ben really is quite rich. He has many fake identities and people and money spread out on and off the island. It’s unknown where or how the Others managed to get all this power and wealth.
