5 Serialized Shows In The Top 10 Most Pirated TV Shows of 2010

#LostInOneTweet

It’s always interesting to look at the top pirated TV shows of the year, as it gives a good indication of which television shows were ‘unofficially’ in demand throughout the year. That is, shows which were illegally downloaded largely due to limited accessibility or country restrictions.

While the 2010 list should definitely give ‘the powers that be’ something to think about, last year saw a levelling off in the growth of BitTorrent shows, with 5 serialized shows making the top 10 list.

We’ve given one of those shows away with the picture above, but can you guess the other four shows?

On the 2010 most pirated television show list, Torrent Freak adds:

TV-shows have traditionally increased in popularity on BitTorrent year after year. In 2010, however, when we look at the most downloaded titles of the year this growth seems to have levelled off a little.

The massive piracy of TV-shows is mostly a reflection of the unavailability of these shows in countries outside the U.S., and a signal that TV viewing habits are changing. There is a huge interest in on-demand TV and there are millions of viewers that can potentially bring in millions of dollars in revenue.

The percentage of TV-downloaders from the U.S. has steadily declined over the last years, in part thanks to alternative viewing options such as Hulu.

Here’s the top 10:

1. Lost
2. Heroes
3. Dexter
4. The Big Bang Theory
5. House
6. How I Met Your Mother
7. 24
8. True Blood
9. Glee
10. Family Guy

Interesting that 5 serialized shows should make the list – LOST, Heroes, Dexter, 24, and True Blood.

Heroes is the most intriguing one for me – by my recollection it only aired 9 episodes in 2010 and yet comes second.

The overall levelling off suggests that the fight against piracy is showing results due to the increased availability of TV shows. However, the country restrictions on alternative mediums such as Hulu continue to frustrate international viewers.

What do you think of this top 10 list? Are there any shows there that you didn’t expect to see? What about shows you thought would have made it but didn’t?

Thanks to Spin-off for the heads-up.
