We see Jesse’s satellite finally working in a shot similar to 2.07’s closing. The only difference is, Jane’s chair is knocked over, most likely foreshadowing her death in 2.11. There are a few more similar premonitions this season…remember how bells were heard in the distance before Jane joined Jesse?
- The symbolic empty chair also brings to mind how Skyler was absent during Walt’s chemo session in 2.05: breaking the bond…
- We learn that Jane’s been in recovery for the past 18 months. But her chip is double-sided, of course: Jesse and Jane eventually switch roles, as Jesse goes into rehab (fitting the ‘achievement’ side) and Jane starts using heroin again (“Keeps coming back”):
- Jesse’s mattress is delivered. This is curious, as the mattress seems to be symbolizing Jane’s spiritual bond with Jesse and their love, yet eventually becomes her ‘deathbed’ by the end of the season:
- Coin flips and milestone chips with their double implications reappear throughout the show: Walt throws away the “Hope” button in 2.05 as he’s already put the former life behind. He also flips a coin in this episode, like in 1.02, to leave difficult decisions up to chance. Skyler does the same thing in 4.06 to decide whether or not she should stay with Walt.
