3 Things I Learned Today: Walking Dead, Sandman, Alcatraz

Today I learned that AMC don’t want us to get too far ahead of ourselves with talk of The Walking Dead getting a second season. That there’s no end to the recent flurry of comic book adaptations. And that Bad Robot are obsessed with frickin Islands.

1. AMC Shoot Down Walkers

AMC want “to dispel the rumor” that they already renewed The Walking Dead for a second season, as “that is not the case yet.” AMC must love the Internet for the good feeling it has extended to their shows, but on this occasion they want to control the goodwill. And to be fair, if they haven’t made the decision yet, then it’s their duty to put the record straight.

2. Time for Another Comic Book Adaptation?

Comic book adaptations are all the rage right now. The Neil Gaiman-penned comic book, “The Sandman” is in the early stages of being ported into a TV series:

Warner Bros. TV is in the midst of acquiring television rights from sister company DC Entertainment and is in talks with several writer-producers about adapting the 1990s series. At the top of the list is Eric Kripke, creator of the CW’s horror-tinged “Supernatural.”

“Sandman” told the tale of Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. The book began in the horror realm but quickly made its mark in fantasy and mythology as Gaiman introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters that includes Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

3. Islands. Endless Islands.

JJ. Abrams and his Bad Roboteers will MAKE you watch their television shows, or they’ll take you to Alcatraz. Actually, I got that kinda confused. They’re making a TV show based on Alcatraz. And you thought the Island story was over. Ha! Not if Elizabeth Sarnoff has anything to do with it:

Abrams and his Warner Bros. TV-based Bad Robot are about to take out to the networks Alcatraz, a drama spec script written by Sarnoff. Like all things Bad Robot, the project is shrouded in secrecy but it is about the San Francisco Bay island that once housed some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone. (UPDATE: The script which will be shopped was written by Sarnoff. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt had sold an early version of the project to Bad Robot.)

In all seriousness, I don’t expect this to be anything like LOST. And now that LOST is over it’s natural that a lot of the writing staff and crew that worked on the show are looking for, or working on, other gigs. Alcatraz doesn’t seem original enough for me to get too excited about at this stage. Unless, they add Prisoner-type spice to it. Or bring in Smokey for one last hurrah.

There has to be more to this Alcatraz thing than meets the eye, cuz on the surface, it just doesn’t “speak to me”. Certainly doesn’t sound like typical Bad Robot fare.

I hear you. I’m clinging to the hope that they put their very distinctive twist on it, otherwise it seems quite..bland.

Once we get more news on the project perhaps we’ll feel differently.
