3 Things I Learned Today: Fringe, Doctor Who, Sherlock

by Roco on August 31, 2010 · 0 comments

Today I learned that all is not what is seems with Fringe. The next series of Doctor Who looks set to change things up further. And Sherlock has me ever so slightly worried for the first time (although my Sherlock reserves still runneth over).

This post contains mild spoilers for all three shows mentioned above, so be warned.

1. Fringe Confusion

There’s a bit of confusion in the Fringe community over the release of the new season 3 episode photos, which appear to contradict earlier statements and expectations on how the first part of the season will be structured. Did FOX simply make a mistake in miss-labelling or releasing the wrong set of promotional photos? Or did they do it on purpose to spike interest in the series prior to the launch of the show’s third season?

To be honest it could be either, but it does prove my point that revealing story details too early can (in some cases) end up causing more confusion than anything else!

2. Apparently I wont be hearing EXTERMINATE! Next Season

Because the Daleks look set to be shelved for a while. Speaking at the Edinburgh Festival, Steven Moffat said that he wouldn’t force a Dalek storyline on the next series:

“There will be a Dalek story when we’ve got a good idea for a Dalek story. [When that happens], there will be lots of different kinds of Daleks.”

Although the Daleks are great in their own way, I’m not too bothered by the prospect of them not appearing in the next series. I think the Doctor can do with going a while without running into another Dalek plot twist, so that when he does eventually face-off with them again, it feels more..epic. All those ‘emergency temporal-shifts’ were getting a bit ridiculous (although very enjoyable).

3. Sherlock wants to be a hero but I’m not sure that I want him to be a hero.

According to co-creator Steven Moffat:

“As the episodes of Sherlock go on he becomes a better man. He learns to be a hero.”

I want him to grow and deepen in the second installment of Sherlock, but I don’t want him to become a less interesting character as a result. I see him more as an anti-hero than a hero. Hopefully his evolution wont see him lose all of the ‘charm’ that made watching him so great this summer.
